Publisher's summary

The Denver Post hails Craig Johnson's Walt Longmire mystery series as a must-read. Joining the four previous novels - all of which have been Book Sense picks - The Dark Horse puts a unique Wyoming twist on the classic British village mystery.

Sheriff Longmire investigates when his instincts tell him something isn't right about a prisoner accused of killing her husband. Wade Barsad, a man with a dubious past, locked his wife's horses in their barn and burned the animals alive. In return, Mary shot Wade in the head six times - or so the story goes. Walt doesn't believe Mary's confession, and he's determined to dig deeper. Posing as an insurance claims investigator, Walt soon discovers other people who might have wanted Wade dead, including a beautiful Guatemalan bartender and a rancher with a taste for liquor, but not for honesty.

The Dark Horse is sure to build on the success of Another Man's Moccasins as Sheriff Longmire unpins his star and ventures into a town without pity to save a woman without hope.

Sheriff Undercover on Horseback..

I believe this is Craig Johnson's fifth in the Longmire series, but it never gets boring or fomulaic: new characters, plot twists, new location and spectacular climax out on the high prairie.

The Dark Horse

Another great Longmire book by Craig Johnson. The books are different than the Netflix Series of Longmire so don't try to compare the too. The books are a little more graphic than the Series. I love the books and I love the TV Show too.

The Dark Horse by Craig Johnson

I just love this series, well written, smart, witty and funny. Complicated plots, our country sheriff is a great guy, who I would love to meet. Just love George Guidall's reading of these books, there's hope for us old folks yet!

Another great story

I have enjoyed all of the series by Craig Johnson. George Guidell gives each character a voice of their own. Henry Standing Bear is my favorite and has the best comedy lines.

really enjoyed this book book 5

it's not just a murderer with starting events and going through different events and blah blah blah ...
it's about character development any further develops Walt this book too large degree...
the regular characters don't have a large role to play in this particular book but there's still themselves and there's some further development with them as well..
. the story has lots of twists and turns and you can tell the research is well done and of course the performance is stellar as it has been this narrator knows his business..

Just Terrific!

I LOVE Craig Johnson's "Walt Longmire" mysteries. . . or maybe I am in love with Walt. . . either way, this is yet another great story in the series. This time, Walt attempts to go undercover in a backwater Wyoming town to resolve a murder. He and his pal "the Indian Nation" do their best and the story offers great excitement, many twists and turns, a little romantic speculation and lots of humor.

If you haven't started the series, do! Cold Dish will introduce you and from there, it is a sure bet that you'll want all eight of Walt's stories in your library.

And another good story involving Walt.

Another complex and emotionally invested "mystery" novel. It is true that many of the supporting cast are not present in this book (because Walt leaves them behind to go "undercover"), but I don't think that hurt the story at all. There wasn't much room (or need) for the sidekicks here.

It might have been a bit more "hands on" than previous books - where Walt has to physically interact with the "bad guys", but this whole thread had a secondary motive: to help Walt purge some of his internalized anger. Yeah, Walt is an angry man... an angry man who works for the "good" side, but still very angry. I think the events in this book might have helped purge him of some of that (and we shall see for sure in the next Walt installation).

The mystery might actually have been a bit more detailed than usual, and I liked the flash forward way the story was told for the bulk of the book. This difference in the story telling method actually helped differentiate this book from others in the series (after all, after awhile, books with the same characters, in the same setting, solving mysteries, might become hard to distinguish from each other).

The narrator *is* Walt Longmire. There is some swearing but it is not excessive. There is no sex or graphic violence (though there is violence). I have bought the rest of the series from Audible.
