Publisher's summary

The Denver Post hails Craig Johnson's Walt Longmire mystery series as a must-read. Joining the four previous novels - all of which have been Book Sense picks - The Dark Horse puts a unique Wyoming twist on the classic British village mystery.

Sheriff Longmire investigates when his instincts tell him something isn't right about a prisoner accused of killing her husband. Wade Barsad, a man with a dubious past, locked his wife's horses in their barn and burned the animals alive. In return, Mary shot Wade in the head six times - or so the story goes. Walt doesn't believe Mary's confession, and he's determined to dig deeper. Posing as an insurance claims investigator, Walt soon discovers other people who might have wanted Wade dead, including a beautiful Guatemalan bartender and a rancher with a taste for liquor, but not for honesty.

The Dark Horse is sure to build on the success of Another Man's Moccasins as Sheriff Longmire unpins his star and ventures into a town without pity to save a woman without hope.

Great except

Walt gets shot and injured to many times. I understand the twist with the fight but Walt isn’t the only one that can fight with an injury. The bad aren’t the only ones that die but in this case I don’t know why cantankerous Gentleman had to die.

Excellent - the best one yet!

This has everything I look for in a mystery - interesting characters who evolve over the series, a distinctive setting, a plot with some twists and turns, and a terrific narrator. There is a lot of humor too, which is more effective for me in audio. I rarely laugh out loud when I read in print, but when the line is delivered with the right tone and timing, it cracks me up. The mystery is well put together, with small details turning out to be important later on. As usual, Walt has amazing strength and stamina when he needs it, even though he is of mature age, but it's ok with me.

This recording also has an extended interview between narrator George Guidall (one of the greatest) and author Craig Johnson, and it's delightful.

Love the Series

Where does The Dark Horse rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

I love all of the books in this series. I think the author has the right amount of humor and mystery plot. The reader of these books does a wonderful job.

Who was your favorite character and why?

I don't really have a favorite. I love all of the characters for various reasons.

Which character – as performed by George Guidall – was your favorite?

See above.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

Humm.......I don't know.

Always a different plot twist - always excellent

One of the things that is exciting about the Longmire series is how different each one is. You can not predict where Walt will find himself and how events will play out. Craig Johnson is one of the finest authors working today. His descriptions are so vivid you feel you are there watching the action. Each book is better than the one before.

Another great Longmire book

Every book adds a bit more to your understanding of Walt Longmire, and this one follows form. However, in this book he shares the spotlight with the horse of your dreams! Don’t miss Longmire’s somewhat clumsy attempt to work undercover!

Never met a Walt Longmire I didn't like

I keep waiting for the next Craig Johnson listen. I can only say what I've said before. Johnson and Guidall are perfect partners, the characters are a hoot and I can't wait for them to weave in and out of the stories.

Enjoyed the chat at the end between Guidall and Johnson. I enjoy these, as few as they are, since it paints an interesting picture of the author.
