Miss Silver is returning from holiday when a distraught young woman enters her carriage. Beautiful society heiress Lisle Jerningham confides that she believes her husband, Dale, is trying to kill her. An overheard conversation and a near-tragic accident have convinced her that her life is in danger. Lisle returns to Tanfield Court, unsettled by her suspicions and then by another accident. But it’s when a young woman from the local village is found dead at the bottom of a cliff that she really begins to fear for her life. It’s a good thing that Miss Silver is on hand….

Patricia Wentworth was a contemporary of Agatha Christie but in fact, wrote her first successful mystery novels a few years before Christie published her first Miss Marple books. There are striking similarities in the two protagonists and if you love Miss Marple, you will no doubt love Miss Silver as well. Diana Bishop, as usual, does an outstanding job with the narration. I am a great fan of the "cozy" British mystery and find all of Patricia Wentworth's books to be great fun. I am thrilled that Audible is adding more of them all the time.
I love Patricia Wentworth's classic British mysteries in the style of Agatha Christie, but the heroine in this story is beyond the degree of drippy, chin-trembling, knee-knocking weakness that this listener can stomach. I actually was rooting for her to get killed. As I say in most of my Wentworth reviews, if you are an addict of classic golden age British cozies, there will come a day when you have listened twice over to all the Dorothy Sayers, Agatha Christies, and Ngaio Marshes. Then you will listen two or three times over to Wentworth's best: the longer, more elegant and imaginative and suspenseful stories such as The Watersplash. THEN will come the day when you will start listening your way through Wentworth's lesser cannon. And you'll mostly enjoy it, you might even enjoy this one, just don't be surprised if you root for the killer.
Danger Point is an cozy murder mystery set in 1939, and begins when a young wife overhears disturbing gossip about her husband and his first wife. Miss Silver makes few appearances, I found myself wanting to read more about her! The story itself was entertaining; however the heroine was often listless and had such poor self-esteem that most of my motivation to finish was to learn how she would fair off.
My first Miss Silver mystery, not my last!
This series is wonderful, lot of twists and turns with excellent character.
This is similar to Georgette Heyer 20's 30's mysteries. Much about character and description. Not fast, to be savored.
She reads well, very appropriate to the genre.
This is perfect for a quiet time. Takes you away. Love the knitting sideline!
A good story, but I had a bit of difficulty with the main character. Do people exist who are so lame and pathetic? Even when I was 19 I had more gumption than this 21 year old wimp! Still a good story, but had to get around wanting to slap some sense into the main character!
There is nothing like a good British cozy and I usually enjoy a Miss Silver Mystery, even if they are formulaic. Diana Bishop, the narrator, may have a bit to do with that. I disliked The Danger Point. The main female character (Lisle) was insipid and not very bright. It was one of those times I wished the killer had succeeded. The murderer was never in doubt. Miss Silver hardly appears and feels like an afterthought. Maybe I need to take a break from Miss Silver. I have listened to three in the last month, and it really brought home how similar they really are.
love to read and love audio books!Favorite authors: Marcia Willett,Nevil Shute,Mary Stewart, and Jacqueline Winspear. I could go on and on but wont bore you! I belong to a book group and we often" Listen" to the books we have selected for the month while using a paper copy for the discussion notes. It really enhances the quality of the story.
Patricia Wentworth is" well worth" a listen any time. Her stories are complex and well written. Love the narrator! I plan to get a few more soon.
"Enjoyable cozy mystery"
Another enjoyable Miss Silver. Thoroughly entertaining and fun to listen to. Ready for the next in this series of books
