Publisher's summary

Donald E. Westlake is one of the greats of crime fiction. Under the pseudonym Richard Stark, he wrote twenty-four fast-paced, hardboiled novels featuring Parker, a shrewd career criminal with a talent for heists. Using the same nom de plume, Westlake also completed a separate series in the Parker universe, starring Alan Grofield, an occasional colleague of Parker. While he shares events and characters with several Parker novels, Grofield is less calculating and more hot-blooded than Parker; think fewer guns, more dames.

Not that there isn’t violence and adventure aplenty. The Damsel begins directly after the Parker novel The Handle. Following a wounded Grofield and his damsel on a scenic, action-packed road trip from Mexico City to Acapulco, The Damsel is full of wit, adrenaline, and political intrigue.

RC BRAY Is ALAN GROFIELD

RC Bray is the best Grofield narrator to date, while Kramer holds the crown for Parker. This is a delightful yarn a shade or two closer to Westlake than the usual Stark novel, and not to be missed.

Damsel in distress

Started off very interesting. It's a fun listen but the story is not great overall, going flat as it develops. Cool style and characters. Good reader performance.

Great listen!

I downloaded this book because it was narrated by RC Bray. It wasn't until several chapters in that I realized that I knew this story. Paul Newman played this character in a movie called Harper, right down to all of the characters names (except Grofield.) Insane.

I loved the story. There were so many twists and turns. I knew the ending but it still was mind blowing.

You can't go wrong with anything narrated by RC Bray but this listen was extra special when I realized I had seen a movie of the same acted by one of the greats.

Almost as good as Parker

Very entertaining, but Grofield doesn't have the wonderful gravitas of Parker. Nevertheless, I highly recommend it.

weak ending

I was spellbound until the end, which was contrived, leaving too many loose ends.
