Publisher's summary

The sun rides high over the British Empire and the light still sparkles brightly in Amelia Peabody's eye as she returns for her second adventure in archaeology and romantic mystery as recounted in her lively journal, The Curse of the Pharaohs.

It was Sir Henry's intention to ensure that no tomb had been overlooked in the previous expedition. Scarcely had the men been at work for three days when their spades uncovered the first of a series of steps cut into the rock.

The Times gave the story a full column, on page three. The next dispatch to come to Luxor, however, rated front-page headlines. Sir Henry Baskerville was dead. He was found next morning stiff and stark in his bed. On his face was a look of ghastly horror. On his high brow, inscribed in what appeared to be dried blood, was a crudely drawn uraeus serpent, the symbol of the divine pharaoh.

Instead of digging up the treasures of a lost age, it appeared that Amelia and her friend Radcliffe were excavating a deadly curse.

Fun and Entertaining

This narrator is great. She is so skilled at doing different voice and adds such entertainment to the stories. I often find myself laughing. Just pure fun and entertainment.

So Victorian - so dramatic

I love Amelia Peabody and I love how Barbara Rosenblat dramatizes her and the other innumerable voices in Ms. Rosenblat's repertoire. Other than a few niggles about pronunciation ( maybe she uses the British pronunciations rather than American), I loved every minute of it. This is early Elizabeth Peters while the quality was still high. In the later novels, quality did drop off a bit as it always does with even the best authors. But I would gladly listen to this again.

Well Written and Well Read

Ms Rosenblat reads Ms Peabody very well - including all of the Victorian vocal beguilments. I laughed out loud!

The 2nd book of This exotic mystery is even more

Is even more fun. Lots of tongue in check humor, very British. Over the top, Fabulouse narration, Ms Rosenblat is a magician at character and voices. Thoughly enjoyed it. Great escapist fiction.

Looking for mummies 5 star books! 1 star choice?

I'm actually listening to this set this time. most of the Amelia's stories or Peabody as her husband tends to call her I have read several times. This author went by a different name when I was first introduced to her and awaited very impatiently for each book to come out! As you go through the set, you are introduced to some extremely diverse people. Also you watch the family children grow from baby to adult. Walter Jr. or Ramses as he is called, becomes his inexplicable self. A demon ? or a very highly intelligent individual who tends to do things "his way". Funny and if you like things Egyptian these are the books for you! One tends to love them but also you want to shake them for their attitudes.

Brilliant!

Barbara Rosenblatt is the perfect Amelia. She's also the perfect Emerson, Evelyn and all the other characters. Her range as a narrator is astounding and she rivals Jim Dale (in the Harry Potter series) for her ability to completely inhabit a character. Warning: Elizabeth Peters' Amelia Peabody series is addictive. I wish Audible would make all the books available with Ms. Rosenblatt.
