Publisher's summary

The sun rides high over the British Empire and the light still sparkles brightly in Amelia Peabody's eye as she returns for her second adventure in archaeology and romantic mystery as recounted in her lively journal, The Curse of the Pharaohs.

It was Sir Henry's intention to ensure that no tomb had been overlooked in the previous expedition. Scarcely had the men been at work for three days when their spades uncovered the first of a series of steps cut into the rock.

The Times gave the story a full column, on page three. The next dispatch to come to Luxor, however, rated front-page headlines. Sir Henry Baskerville was dead. He was found next morning stiff and stark in his bed. On his face was a look of ghastly horror. On his high brow, inscribed in what appeared to be dried blood, was a crudely drawn uraeus serpent, the symbol of the divine pharaoh.

Instead of digging up the treasures of a lost age, it appeared that Amelia and her friend Radcliffe were excavating a deadly curse.

A little slow at first, but delightful overall.

It took a while for the action to get going, but Amelia Peabody is always a charmer, and Rosenblatt is among my most trusted narrators.

A great read, both in paper and in audio format!

I love the Amelia Peabody series, and have read and listened to all of the books many times. To me, they never get old. The combination of both Peters' literary genius and Rosenblat's masterful narration makes any book in this series a must-have! I look forward to enjoying these books for many years to come.

Thank goodness for Barbara Rosenblat!!!!

I love Amelia Peabody and nobody could "do" her like Ms. Rosenblat does. I rushed through book one so I could hear this installment read by one of my favorite narrators. I was not disappointed! Within a few minutes I had a smile plastered on my face - where it stayed during the entire story. All the characters come alive. Brilliant, brilliant brilliant!

Good Story, superbly read

Would you listen to The Curse of the Pharaohs again? Why?

Yes, because book two develops the characters that appear in later stories and I would like to gain a bit more background of them. Also the story is gripping.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Curse of the Pharaohs?

Emerson's antics at the Fantasia. Also their decision at the end to take Ramses with them in future.

Which character – as performed by Barbara Rosenblat – was your favorite?

Peabody

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I like the series, but have only had the later ones read and so I was looking forward to hear the earlier books to set the scene, so to speak, for the later ones. Often I find myself smiling. Laugh out loud - not yet.

Any additional comments?

Has Ms Rosenblatt recorded all the books in the series?

Fun, Fun, Fun - Dry Humor!

Writer has great sense of dry humor. Not the best book ever, but story line is interesting and the performance was over the top good. I went back and forth on 4 or 5 stars, but it was a delightful read and kept a smile on my face so I went with 5 stars for the pure entertainment value.

A favorite for the series

As always, a plethora of colorful and distinctive characters populate this Peabody mystery, some of who become series-long favorites (you can guess who they are by who's not dead at the end). I think this is one of my favorites because it kept me guessing; I really was surprised at how well everything ultimately tied together. The sheer body count reminded me of Agatha Christie, and keeps things lively throughout. Just listened to it for the third time, of many more, I'm sure.
