Publisher's summary

Published under a pseudonym, J. K. Rowling’s brilliant debut mystery introduces Detective Cormoran Strike as he investigates a supermodel's suicide in “one of the best books of the year” (USA Today).

After losing his leg to a land mine in Afghanistan, Cormoran Strike is barely scraping by as a private investigator. Strike is down to one client, creditors are calling, and after a breakup with his longtime girlfriend, he’s living in his office.

Then John Bristow walks through his door with a shocking story: His sister, the legendary supermodel Lula Landry - known to her friends as the Cuckoo - famously fell to her death a few months earlier. The police ruled it a suicide, but John refuses to believe that. The case plunges Strike into the world of multimillionaire beauties, rock-star boyfriends, and desperate designers, and it introduces him to every variety of pleasure, enticement, seduction, and delusion known to man.

You may think you know detectives, but you've never met one quite like Strike. You may think you know about the wealthy and famous, but you've never seen them under an investigation like this.

Fast-paced and sharply drawn, this dazzling detective novel inspired Strike, the BBC crime drama series that has captivated millions of viewers worldwide.

Warning: will cause a fierce attachment to fictional characters and an inability to press pause
"The Cuckoo’s Calling is a masterfully written gritty detective story that hooks you and refuses to let go until its pulse-pounding conclusion. J. K. Rowling (writing under a pseudonym) shows off her literary range in this compelling thriller. The only good thing about finishing this one is the three more equally unpauseable Cormoran Strike thrillers that are ready to listen to and get lost in."

Very interesting.

Just the right amount of twists. And very like-able characters. I look for to more Strike stories.

Wonderful start to Strike mystery series

There's something wildly romantic about this exceptionally well written beginning of the series. The beginning of the series finds the wounded British Army hero barely hanging on to his detective agency in London. The day that he is brought a much-needed new case to work on - the seeming suicide of a world-famous young model - is also his new temp's first day on the job. The two quickly form a strong professional bond, each working to bring the truth forward. Their personal lives, meanwhile, intertwine. The writer makes London a character in this book, much as Conan Doyle did. The writer also has a wicked sense of satire, brought to the subject of fame and the famous, and the obsessions and envies fame engenders in popular culture. The long, twisted plot is diabolically clever, but the author is a genius, and crafts it so that - on a first listen or read - we don't know until the end that Strike had it figured out from the beginning. That makes a second and third listening even more fun - to appreciate fully the author's amazing gifts of mystery writing.

Thoroughly enjoyed the book

Enjoyed the suspense and build up of the story and characters. Very masterful. I am however curious why JB decided to reopen/have the case re-investigated when it appeared a done deal?

A great start to a series!

I really enjoyed the performance. Robert Glenister did a fantastic job. I think people who read crime novels will like these books. I’m also drawn in by the chemistry between Cormoran and Robin (I’m currently on book 3) and look forward to the rest of the books in this series.

It started off a little slow but definitely captured my interest quickly. Narrator was great and easy to listen to through the story.

You're going to love Robin and Cormoran.

I admit it; I've never read Harry Potter. But Rowling's writing genius is proven under the pen name Robert Galbraith. I'm hooked and will read everything Rowling writes in the future. As far as this book goes, it's a noir at its best, with rich, flawed, and wonderful characters. Robin's and Cormoran's mutual attraction is well developed, yet Galbraith leaves us hungry, so hungry, for what will happen next. I'm a huge fan. I can't wait for the next one in the series.
