Publisher's summary

Drew Danner, a crime novelist with a house off L.A.'s storied Mulholland Drive, awakens in a hospital bed with a scar on his head and no memory of being found convulsing over his ex-fiancee's body the previous night. He was discovered holding a knife, her blood beneath his nails. He himself doesn't know whether he's guilty or innocent.

To reconstruct the story, the writer must now become the protagonist, searching the corridors of his life and the city he loves. Soon Drew closes in on clues he may or may not have left for himself. And as another young woman is similarly murdered, he has to ask difficult questions - not of others but of himself.

Critic reviews

"Hurwitz's L.A. thriller has noir pulp chutzpah in spades." ( Publishers Weekly)
"Hurwitz's insights about L.A. life sound knowing and are often ruefully funny, e.g., 'L.A., where a porn star runs for governor and an action figure wins.' Crime fans looking for something different will love this one." ( Booklist)

Great book, surprising twist

I usually like Gregg’s books but this one seemed especially good. Scott Brick was professional and easy on the ears. I highly recommend this book.

It's more real than you think

This book contains a realistic yet maddening dose of presumption of guilt from police and even many colleagues. However, it also contains a reassuring few friends who have his back no matter what. Sometimes the story feels a little contrived or unlikely, but on the other hand, life events sometimes align in strange ways. Overall, the confusion and struggles just getting through some days will likely resonate with many readers.

CHILLINGLY DIFFERENT

Loved this one. It kept me wondering from beginning to end. Not able to predict the ending from. half way through or less as is the case with so many. Narrators voice is perfect. Main character is a perfect combination of droll and extremely serious.i felt a real person here. Many twists and turns, but none seemed artificial. Overall this is 5 stars in every way.

Flowing intrigue

Main character is interesting but maybe a little self assured? Enjoyable read. Violence is down played, do not graphic.

Won't appeal to everybody

Some people loved this book and some hated it. Same for the narration. If you read the reviews, notice the reasons people disliked it. If you know those would bother you, maybe another choice would be better. The meandering and protracted descriptions didn't bother me, nor did Scott Brick's sometimes over-dramatic narration. A few times quirks in the story were annoying, but not enough to turn me off. I do wish editors were more attentive. Andrew's editor friend would never have let him get away with taping wrists and tying ankles initially and then reversing the methods -- ignoring a reasonable explanation for the first choice. That's just one example. If the editors think no one will notice they're wrong.

Wow. Started as a fan of Orphan X now a fan of Hurwitz

Greg did such an amazing job. The twists and turns had me addicted. I found myself running more errands so I could keep listening as I drove. Totally worth a credit
