    "I love this series!"

I began the Brother Cadfael chronicles years ago in paperback form and enjoy them even more with Stephen Thorne reading them to me! These are genteel adventures that transport you back to the 12th century, very well researched. The literary quality of this series is always top notch and I could listen to this narrator all day every day. I would recommend beginning with the first 2 from this series in order, A Morbid Taste for Bones followed by One Corpse Too Many. They set up the rest of the series. From then on it is nice to read them in order which keeps a continuity in the sub-plot story lines, but each one can stand well on its own. Before Audible got this series I had to take whatever the local libraries had available and I still thoroughly enjoyed them even out of order.

PBS has a series based on thee books with Derek Jacobi as Brother Cadfael (who also does an excellent job narrating a different version of the audio series) but my husband and I didn't even finish watching one episode because it was such a letdown after reading the books. If you enjoyed watching that series, you should be completely amazed by the books. Stephen Thorne is my favorite narrator for this series but I can't imagine anyone being disappointed in Jacobi's readings.

"slowest of all Br Cadfael stories"

Quality of audio and narration: excellent

Br Cadfael tales are hardly action packed, but this one is slow from start to finish. There is little, precious little, action. If you love Br. Cadfael, you'll sit through 6 hours, but this one borders on dull.
