Publisher's summary

Introducing Wyoming's Sheriff Walt Longmire in this riveting novel from the New York Times best-selling author of Dry Bones, the first in the Longmire series, the basis for the hit Netflix original series Longmire.

Fans of Ace Atkins, Nevada Barr, and Robert B. Parker will love this outstanding first novel, in which New York Times best-selling author Craig Johnson introduces Sheriff Walt Longmire of Wyoming's Absaroka County. Johnson draws on his deep attachment to the American West to produce a literary mystery of stunning authenticity, full of memorable characters. After 25 years as sheriff of Absaroka County, Walt Longmire's hopes of finishing out his tenure in peace are dashed when Cody Pritchard is found dead near the Northern Cheyenne Reservation. Two years earlier, Cody has been one of four high school boys given suspended sentences for raping a local Cheyenne girl. Somebody, it would seem, is seeking vengeance, and Longmire might be the only thing standing between the three remaining boys and a Sharps .45-70 rifle.

With lifelong friend Henry Standing Bear, Deputy Victoria Moretti, and a cast of characters both tragic and humorous enough to fill in the vast emptiness of the high plains, Walt Longmire attempts to see that revenge, a dish best served cold, is never served at all.

Language

Could do with a little less foul language. It didn’t add a thing to the story.

it's not the television show

if you're looking for Longmire the television show this isn't the book. it's not a secret original intent. and while The narrator's voice does not match up with the picture drawn by the author of our main character, he is a very good narrator nonetheless.
l the story is very good and despite being somewhat familiar territory has plenty of twists and turns to make it interesting every step of the way. be prepared to to get to know your favorite characters in a different way. this is definitely worth the read.

Settle in for a great modern western series

Any additional comments?

If you read this Book One of the series you will become officially "Deputized" into the unforgettable cast of characters brought to life by a remarkable narrator. Just as I did, you will immediatley saddle up to look for Book Two. Good stuff for "who dun it" fans.

Great Narrator !

The narrator was so good, I felt like he really understood that character, that locale, He was Longmire. First of this series that I've listened to but it won't be the last.

Good book

I enjoyed this first book in the series. I have read several others C.J. Box, & William Kent Krueger to name a few. I have also watched Longmore on Netflix. I felt the first half of Cold Dish was a little slow but the back half made up for it. It was hard to imagine Walt & Henry as over weight and Vic as dark headed but I try.

Excellent Longmire murder mystery!

My wife and I both enjoyed this audio book very much. It kept us most excellent company on a long car trip and even once we got home. Great story, as well as great narration. Highly recommended, especially if you’re a Walt Longmire fan! :)
