Publisher's summary

Introducing Wyoming's Sheriff Walt Longmire in this riveting novel from the New York Times best-selling author of Dry Bones, the first in the Longmire series, the basis for the hit Netflix original series Longmire.

Fans of Ace Atkins, Nevada Barr, and Robert B. Parker will love this outstanding first novel, in which New York Times best-selling author Craig Johnson introduces Sheriff Walt Longmire of Wyoming's Absaroka County. Johnson draws on his deep attachment to the American West to produce a literary mystery of stunning authenticity, full of memorable characters. After 25 years as sheriff of Absaroka County, Walt Longmire's hopes of finishing out his tenure in peace are dashed when Cody Pritchard is found dead near the Northern Cheyenne Reservation. Two years earlier, Cody has been one of four high school boys given suspended sentences for raping a local Cheyenne girl. Somebody, it would seem, is seeking vengeance, and Longmire might be the only thing standing between the three remaining boys and a Sharps .45-70 rifle.

With lifelong friend Henry Standing Bear, Deputy Victoria Moretti, and a cast of characters both tragic and humorous enough to fill in the vast emptiness of the high plains, Walt Longmire attempts to see that revenge, a dish best served cold, is never served at all.

A story rather than a mystery

I thoroughly enjoyed this AND it was not the same as the TV series at the ending.
The books are much richer and slower than the TV series so they are great for painting the house or taking a walk or doing mindless household chores.
You're reminding the writing reminds me a bit of James Lee Burke during his early stages before his books got so violent. I can't say that I really noticed the foul language as others have said but more the richness of the visualizations and the understandings and the treatment between Walt Longmire and his Indian friend
Henry.
I also like Martin Walker and Louise Penny for their more in depth storytelling. All of these books have excellent plots but I do like the richness of the stories that these for writers have produced.

I'm enthusiastic because now have a new author to follow. Good page-turner with decent character development. I'll look for Johnson again!

Great writing.

Discovered Longmire from excellent TV series but as good as it is, the evocative writing brings so much more that the limitations of a screen play does not allow.
Great performance by one of Audible’s premier narrators.

A Fan Forever

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

You will fall in love with all the characters. They are fleshed out as real human beings with weaknesses, strengths, and likeability factors such as character tics. I could listen to George all day and never tire of his voice...in fact I do as I go about my tasks in the workshop. When this book was completed, there was a void in my ear so I immediately downloaded the next Longmire book. I am finished with the series and am filling the void by re listening to my collection of Longmires! Happy listening!
