Publisher's summary

There are millions of stories in the city - some magical, some tragic, others terror-filled or triumphant. Jonah Kirk’s story is all of those things as he draws listeners into his life in the city as a young boy, introducing his indomitable grandfather, also a "piano man"; his single mother, a struggling singer; and the heroes, villains, and everyday saints and sinners who make up the fabric of the metropolis in which they live - and who will change the course of Jonah’s life forever.

Welcome to The City, a place of evergreen dreams where enchantment and malice entwine, where courage and honor are found in the most unexpected corners and the way forward lies buried deep inside the heart.

Good book that you can't put down

Would you listen to The City again? Why?

This is not the scary Dean Koontz, but very good also. More on the lines of Odd. Had a nice history of black civil rights running in the back ground.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The City?

I loved the Japanese man, you always knew he was more than he appeared.

Not up to his standards for a "good " story.

Interesting fluff but too long to waste your time on. If you like his earlier stuff don't bother with this. Best part was the narrator and he was just so-so.

Not the Usual Koontz

The book was good, but more of a biography with a little bit of supernatural and magic thrown in.

Stess of growing Up

What a surprise! I have been listening to traditional espionage books and this what I expected. after the first 5 minutes I almost returned. This was going to be an autobiography of a young black boy growing up in the city. Boring? No way! Very well written, and a great introduction of many people who influence this young boy. Voodoo, dreams, reality of life experiences and suspense develop in sequential order. Things that an 8-10 year boy experiences. If your looking for a different genre, I highly recommend this book - give it time to develop, you'll get hooked. This was a two for one special ,well worth it, even for one credit. Saying anymore , I could tip off the suspense ending.

So Boring

I've purchased 100+ books on Audible so far and this is by far the worst. I could barely make it through the story and found it supremely uninteresting. Love Koontz but this story is a miss.

Different for Koontz....

What did you love best about The City?

I loved the narrator -- I could just see Jonah through his voice!

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

This was a different tone and mood for a Dean Koontz book. I think because I'm older, and have read every single thing he's written since I was younger, I liked it because it was gentler, slower-paced and not as violent and bloody. It was a little slow at first,, and it took me awhile to get into the rhythm, but I liked it!

Expected more

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

I would not recommend this book to others. It took sooo long to go anywhere but you had to keep listening to see if it ever got interesting. Ok, so it finally got interesting around chapter 80. Everything leading up to that was slow to get to a climax. So now I'm at chapter 93 of 109, drama is over..... where will the next 16 chapters go.... probably explaining the future of the characters. Wherever its going, it's gotten boring again.Really expected more from Dean Koontz.

What do you think your next listen will be?

The Finisher by David Baldacci

Have you listened to any of Korey Jackson’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

No. He was OK, but didn't have much to work with

Was The City worth the listening time?

No. No. No

Any additional comments?

This was my first Dean Koontz. I'll try another, but this one had a difficult time holding my attention.
