Critic reviews

"Cussler takes a breather from his several ongoing series with this historical thriller set in the western states, circa 1906. The U.S. government hires the renowned Van Dorn Detective Agency and its equally renowned lead agent, Isaac Bell, to capture the bank robber known as the Butcher Bandit....Once San Francisco gets hit by the 1906 earthquake and the principals climb aboard a pair of fire-breathing locomotives, the novel cranks up a head of steam and some high-speed thrills." Never a dull moment

Loved the story and the characters. The narrator did a five star job and kept the story interesting with his character portrayals. great detail about real life events included in the book also made it seem real.

The excitement

Clive Cussler is a phenomenal author and every book ever read or listened to written by him is worth rereading or listening to again. It’s exciting and enticing to see or hear the adventures unfold

quick easy listen

This was an entertaining story as most Cussler books are: very defined bad guys going up against our James Bond like good guy. However, the story is implausible and there are some parts that could just be cut out. Also, I found the characters a bit undeveloped and hard to like. Finally, the narrator, Scott Brick, has done some excellent work in the past, but in this book, he is much too melodramatic. If you're looking for a light, fun listen this is a good choice.

VERY PLEASANTLY SURPRISED!

i have lots of WWII books under my belt...my hubby has lots of 'shoot-em-ups' under his belt. when we travel together, we need to find a happy medium. this was our first story by this author and we were very pleasantly surprised. a detective case from the early 1900's...wondering what's next...shootings, but no crazy, gory details...a love interest, but nothing to be uncomfortable with. we will listen to more of clive cussler's books.

A good book

This is my first book by Clive Cussler and I thought it was well written. It kept me in suspense for the most part but it seemed to draw -out too long in a few spots. I like how the author adds in interesting bits of information . I would recommend this book.
