Publisher's summary

The Cater Street Hangman is the first of Anne Perry's Charlotte and Thomas Pitt mysteries. Set in the Victorian era, it is an elegant and complex mystery full of well-drawn characters and rich period detail. When a maid in the upper class Ellison household is strangled, Inspector Pitt is called in to investigate. He finds a world ruled by strict manners and social customs, where the inhabitants of the Ellison's neighborhood appear to be more outraged by the thought of scandal than they are by murder. Inspector Pitt finds a most unlikely ally in Charlotte, the Ellison's spirited daughter. But as the murders continue, Charlotte and Pitt find themselves drawn together by more than the investigation.

generally good

I thought the murderer was pretty obvious but for some reason still enjoyed listening to it. the narrator is good but not great; I find her male voices a little annoying (more weird intonation than different voices).

Good Start to the Thomas and Charlotte Pitt Series

I've read the whole series and absolutely love Anne Perry. This is a good start. It describes the background for both Thomas and Charlotte, how they met, and why Charlotte and Emily can be so helpful in Thomas's cases later in the series.

very enjoyable listen

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I recommend to anyone who likes a mystery and doesn't like too much blood and gore. no bad language or violence. there were murders but we didn;t witness them.
the relationships were appropriate as well. Victorian England and all.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

I kept being fooled as to who did it. all the suspects were so plausible. In the end I did guess it though. but that was fine.

Which character – as performed by Christina Moore – was your favorite?

Davina Porter was the narator and she could read the phone book and it would be good.
My favorite character was Georgiana.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I listen while driving only. I looked for heavy traffic!!!

Any additional comments?

I plan on reading or listening to this entire series. very enjoyable

Great series! Start here!

While you can start anywhere in the series and understand it all, Charlotte's personality is brought out very nicely in this first book and I highly recommend this book as a great place to start!

Full of family drama

Thomas meets Charlotte when he begins the investigation into the murder of one of the family's maids. They clash on everything from class distinction to his investigation technique. The mystery was not the best, but I loved the period setting. I suspected who the perpetrator was about halfway through, but not the motive. Overall I look forward to more stories with these characters.

I loved Cater Street Hangman!

Anne Perry’s novels about Thomas and Charlotte Pitt always intrigue me. The author’s attention to even most minute details of Victorian life are fascinating. I love the dynamic between husband and wife in solving crimes. This book is the first in the Pitt series. It lays the groundwork for all future novels.
There is a murderer in the upscale Victorian neighborhood where Charlotte Ellison lives with her family. Inspector Pitt arrives to investigate the garroting murders of several young women happening around their home on Cater Street.
This first novel explains the meeting of Thomas and Charlotte, and how their relationship develops.
If you like Victoria Holt, you will love Anne Perry.

Reader is Davina Porter not the one listed.

The actual reader is Davina Porter. I am not sure how the staff managed to get the name of the narrator wrong.

This is a good introduction to the Pitt series and in many way I have liked this book best of all. Davina Porter is a superb narrator and I find it unfortunate that many of the later books have male narrators.

The Cater Street Hangman

What I loved most about this book was the articulate language and sentences. The plot was good, but listening to the sweet expression of English was wonderful.
