Publisher's summary

Hilary and Mark Bradley are trapped in a web of suspicion. Last year, accusations of a torrid affair with a student cost Mark his teaching job and made the young couple into outcasts in their remote island town off the Lake Michigan coast. Now another teenage girl is found dead on a deserted beach... and once again, Mark faces a hostile town convinced of his guilt.

Hilary Bradley is determined to prove that Mark is innocent, but she’s on a lonely, dangerous quest. Even when she discovers that the murdered girl was witness to a horrific crime years earlier, the police are certain she’s throwing up a smoke screen to protect her husband. Only a quirky detective named Cab Bolton seems willing to believe Hilary’s story.

Hilary and Cab soon find that people in this community are willing to kill to keep their secrets hidden - and to make sure Mark doesn’t get away with murder. And with each shocking revelation, even Hilary begins to wonder whether her husband is truly innocent.

Freeman’s first stand-alone thriller since his Stride novels is a knockout.

“Brian Freeman is, quite simply, a first-rate storyteller.” (Nelson DeMille, New York Times best-selling author)

Nothing too special

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

Book was fine, kept me entertained but nothing special or exciting. I guess if you've read some fabulous stories in the past, this may just seem hum drum.

Enjoyable

Good characterizations, decent suspense with some good twists near the end. Wouldn't say it's the best I've heard, but a good listen nonetheless. Great for sitting in transportation with time to have some fun.

Good thriller

I enjoyed this book. It is not that easy to find a decent mystery/thriller but this one was pretty good. I didn't figure out what had really happened until near the end so that is always good. Narration was good too. I recommend it and might try others by this author.

Gripping

A great story with lots of twists and turns. just when you think you've figured it out, the story takes a turn and leads you to yet another connection to the story.

Story = A- Narration = F

Let me start with the con: I liked the story enough to endure the narration.

This was the second book by author. It was a very complex story that took place in numerous places with different characters and I found myself having to stop and think, okay which group is this? There was a slight element of oversexed teenage angst that I didn't care for. However there were twists and turns that I didn't foresee, especially the ending.

Some of this seems to have been ripped from the headlines.

I will listen to others by this author is there is another narrator.

excellent narration and story

The narration was spot on. Heard the Wisconsin accent and felt like I was back home! Great plot-had no idea until the end what really happened and why to bring about the series of events that unfolded.

surprisingly entertaining

this is a new author to me and i wasn't disappointed. I don't like graphic books so didn't know how this would rank on the sex and violence scale. very well done!

Definitely a step down from the Stride series...

Story isn't very dynamic. Boring and repetitive/predictable.
Characters aren't very compelling.
Baby-talk names like Lala don't help at all.
Weird how Lala has an accent and then it disappears completely, lol. Narrator must not have been very interested either.
