Publisher's Summary

She couldn't believe that he wanted to meet her. He was famous. She was a nobody. Finally, someone could see how special she was....

When the body of a teenage girl is found in a London hotel, DI Patrick Lennon is mystified. Nobody saw her or her killer enter the hotel, and there is no apparent motive - until a second teenager is found and Lennon realises somebody is targeting fans of the world's biggest boy band.

As Lennon struggles with both his home life and his rivals on the force, the pressure to catch the killer before he strikes again reaches fever pitch. And when Lennon makes a terrible mistake that ends in disaster, he finds himself in a race to save not only the lives of more teenage girls but also his own career.

Exploring the darkest depths of the entertainment industry and the terrifying dangers of social media, The Blissfully Dead is a new masterclass in tension from the #1 bestselling authors of From the Cradle.

    "Wonderful suspense/psychological thriller!"

First, the narrator: This may be the first audiobook British actor has narrated. Darn, he is incredibly good!

The Blissfully Dead is the second Detective Inspector Patrick Lennon novel that British authors Mark Edwards and Louis Voss have co-written. The first was From the Cradle which I reviewed earlier. The Blissfully Dead is about teen girls who go crazy on social media about a a popular boy band. The girls' disagreements and one-upmanship with each other lead to a series of murders with severe torture.

This is a great suspense and psychological thriller.

    "Blissfully Surprised"
What did you love best about The Blissfully Dead?

I thought the overall story line was going to be boring and too teenage like, but I was delightfully surprised. I liked and was intrigued by all the twists & turns.

Who was your favorite character and why?

I liked Carmella's character. She was a strong woman who added a great deal of character to the story.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I couldn't stop listening to this book!!!

    "Great Mystery, Great Police Procedural!"

Don't hesitate to grab this one when you can -- it is a very good mystery which gives way to a very good account of police procedures. As others have noted, the violence is horrifying, but sadly, it is real world, part of the world we live in. While it is a book for mystery lovers first and foremost, it is also a story about on-line danger, on-line bullying and mental illness. That made it an even better listen. The narration was very good and I simply enjoyed it throughout.

    "Narrator Gives Star Performance"
Would you listen to The Blissfully Dead again? Why?

No, but that isn't a poor reflection on the book/story. There are simply too many books, too little time. I want to read more and other books.

Have you listened to any of Simon Mattacks’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I haven't heard Mattacks before, but I was truly amazed at his performance, even early on in the story. Actually, it's the narration that compelled me to even submit the review. Mattacks flowed seamlessly between Patrick's British accent to Carmella's lyrical Irish. Just as impressive, even as a male reader, his timing, phrasing and inflection so perfectly captured the bantering chatter of teenage girls, and the one teenage boy character - without making radical and unnatural sounding shifts in his own voice. It wasn't necessary to speak in an affectedly lower or higher tone to represent any of the characters. The expressive capacity of his voice successfully conveyed the right context anyway. In a word - stunning. I'm new to Audible, but I had some sense that a narrator could make or break the book. If I had read it myself, I wouldn't have enjoyed it nearly as much.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

if it were possible yes. On the other hand, there were enough twists in the story, it would have exhausted me to think through it all in a single sitting.

    Any additional comments?

I love a good story with a riveting plot. But I'll always check out the narrator.

    "Today's world"

At first I was afraid I stumbled into a young adult novel but was pleased that it was an adult point of view on young adults world. Having a teenaged daughter, this story captured their world. I enjoyed the young characters and felt the use of social media and Internet was spot on. It's interesting to see how it can affect our young people. The narrator was excellent.

    "Juvenile with ham-fisted writing"

The quality and style of the writing in this is really clumsy and ham-fisted, even though the ideas (crazed fans, social media, pop stars) are good. And there are some inconsistencies that really should have been caught before this made it to print.......at one point, the story has DI Lennon musing that the killer must have walked, since he (the killer) knew that everyone would be looking for his car - but in the previous chapter, we are told that the car was left behind by the killer and was now in police custody being checked for evidence. That kind of mistake is just plain sloppy. Now, Arthur Conan Doyle was known to have inconsistencies in some of his Sherlock stories too, but the writing quality and characters were so good that they were barely noticeable to engaged readers. Here, they stand out like lightning.

And why does everyone, including the detectives in a major urban police force, act like they're 14? These guys (and gals) don't seem very good at their jobs, or mature enough, to be members of a major investigative unit (a Murder Investigative Team) in a cosmopolitan city like London. I think it's kind of embarrassing to the Met to have their Detectives (whether DC, DS, or DI) think and act like teenagers rather than seasoned professionals. I understand why the teenage girls act like they're 14 or 15, but the detectives?

All in all, it is a book with juvenile characters, clumsy writing, and a few inconsistent plot points. Which is too bad, because the original concept had some merit, in my opinion.

This is a really well written and unusual story. The characters are very well drawn. I love DCI Patrick Lennon, a very human, flawed and likeable character. This is the second in a series of books featuring Lennon. The authors say there will be more. I do wish the other 4 books by Edwards and Voss would be produced in audio format.

    "The Blissfully Dead"

This, the first Voss and Edwards collaboration I've listened to, but the fifth one penned by Edwards was a compelling and engrossing story. Set amongst the world of teenagers, boybands, fan fiction and technology it provided an excellent insight into that would for a middle-aged fuddy duddy such as myself.

DI Patrick Lennon returns - a man haunted by past events and seeking answers. A girl gets murdered in affluent Kingston-upon-Thames; she's a huge fan of the boyband du jour 'On Target' and regularly posts on their official forum and pens fan fiction. This leads to a series of events: are any On Target fans in danger?

This book, although corny in places 'he was wearing jeans which must have cost at least £180.' and slightly repetitive (references to Patrick's tattoos and love of the indie band 'The Cure') didn't detract from the fact that this was a darn good thriller. It was very moreish and Ioved it.

The narrator was fabulous too - extremely versatile and performed a convincing array of accents. I am now going to seek more Edwards and Voss material. Recommended.

What did you like most about The Blissfully Dead?

I did like the way it goes from one persons point, then to another and all comes together without being crass.

What did you like best about this story?

    I simply liked it.

Which character – as performed by Simon Mattacks – was your favourite?

None really but a good narrator.

If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

    No idea

    Any additional comments?

If you want a good British crime novel with no Mills & Boon overtones: this worked for me.
