    "Bad audio quality. No kidding"
What disappointed you about The Black Tower?

I read a review complaining about the production quality, but I didn't believe it. Perhaps I've learned my lesson. The sound is garbled, some of the chapter transitions are abrupt - just an unpleasant listen. As much as I like this reader, I'm not sure I'll finish this.

Would you be willing to try another one of Michael Jayston’s performances?

Definitely. I have enjoyed his performances in the past and hope to again in the future.

    "strange ambience"
Is there anything you would change about this book?

The sound quality of the narration is very uneven.[ Is it a very old audio book?] There is a variation from chapter to chapter, sometimes quite marked, and there is often soft ambient noise behind the narration. It's never very clear, but sometimes it's worse than others.

What didn’t you like about Michael Jayston’s performance?

For me, his pronunciations [eg of 'Michael Baddeley'] were overly pedantic and interfered with my ability to concentrate on the story rather than on the reading.

Could you see The Black Tower being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?

Yes, I think it has been done already.

    Any additional comments?

The least enjoyable of the P D James stories I have listened to because of the poor technical quality [but still worth hearing].

    "A stunner."

Masterfully woven tale. You feel Dalgliesh's vulnerability and how his psychological make-up changes as his physical condition improves.
Slow start but very 'human' characters. Listened to it long into the night because I simply had to know how it ended.

    "Details"

Although P D James is meticulous about the smallest details, she made 2 errors:

    1. The sister's headgear, a triangular veil, as worn in the forces nursing services (used to be!) - was worn in the QARANC, which was the army nursing service. In the text it is wrongly named - what P D James calls it would have been the naval nursing service, which is not what she's describing here.

    2. 'Specializing' a patient i.e. one-to-one care by a named nurse to one patient - no, it was called 'specialling' not 'specializing'. A patient was described as 'being specialled by nurse.....'
