Publisher's summary

When an LAPD narcotics officer is found with a fatal bullet wound and a suicide note, Detective Harry Bosch follows a bloody trail of drug murders across the Mexico border.

Working on the case, LAPD detective Harry Bosch is reminded of the primal police rule he learned long ago: Don't look for the facts, but the glue that holds them together. Soon Harry's making some very dangerous connections, starting with a dead cop and leading to a bloody string of murders that wind from Hollywood Boulevard to the back alleys south of the border. Now this battle-scarred veteran will find himself in the center of a complex and deadly game - one in which he may be the next and likeliest victim.

Impressed? Ace detective Harry Bosch is also on the case in other exciting Michael Connelly crime-fiction novels.

Avid Reader of Mystery Books

Loved it! Lots of unforseen twists and turns. I recommend this series. I also liked Dick Hill the narrator. He keeps the story moving along.

Slow at times but overall enjoyed the book

Overall, I enjoyed the book and as it played out, I listened to it with more interest. There were chapters where I became 'bored' with the story but as it progressed and the story unfolded, I understood why each character was introduced. There were many characters in the story which played a significant roll causing the story to bounce around like a ping pong match. Unfortunately, about 80% of the way into the book, the plot unraveled fast and the book ended as I figured.

Bureaucracy and politics were painted as villains (as most perceive them) and Bosch's character builds showing some 'honor' when he attempts to make a situation better (I won't do a spoiler) by paying for a room or when he feels bad for lying to honest characters in the book.

Bosch must be a serious ladies man as he continues his Casanova style with some of the most unlikely women.

Will I listen to another Bosch - yes, but not immediately.

Michael Connelly has an interesting way in painting characters and the story.

Great story and great narration. No complaints.

We learn more about Harry Bosch and his past as this exciting story unfolds. I've really enjoyed the first two Harry Bosch books.

A Grabber Rightbzfrom The Start

Bosch is in rare form helping solve a particularly bad murder. He is now working out of Hollywood division having been punished for some unexplainable events from the first book. He shows up at the scene even though he's not supposed to be on this case. Suffice it to say that he not only solves the murder but he solves a very mixed up family situation of the killer. He also gets to know the widow and gets himself out of trouble with his bosses. It is a very well done mystery with the usual Bosch "take no prisoners" attitude. He has established his persona even tho, this is only the second book. Great narrator in Dick Hill.

Good but skipped a step

Just wrapped up the story without proving the villain was guilty. Unless I missed it.

Another great Bosch novel

I loved the first Bosch book with Titus Welliver narrating. I think I enjoyed this book even more. The story was tight, plays into the noir setting and dialogue perfectly. The narrator, Dick Hill, was nearly as good as Welliver, and did some nice audio tricks when dialogue was across phone lines, police radio, etc., that gave the desired effect and helped you to really feel the setting. He had an excellent variety of character voices and accents as well. There were a few characters voices I didn’t love but that’s only because I’m used to the characters on the TV show, all of which Welliver mimics perfectly. But this narration was probably done long before the TV show. I will gladly read more Connelly novels and listen to books narrated by Dick Hill.

a good one

I've listened to plenty of the author's books, both Bosch and Haller. Still, I didn't start at the beginning of the Bosch series so slowly but surely I've gone back and listened to the earlier books, this one being #2.

It's a good, tight police thriller laying the groundwork for the series moving forward. A cop gets killed and Harry gets drawn in and he won't let go of solving the mystery even through there is ample reason to do so. The case takes him to Calexico/Mexicali on the border where many of the answers lie and Harry goes in spite of many reasons not to, that's our Harry right!
