Publisher's summary

An LAPD homicide detective must choose between justice and vengeance as he teams up with the FBI in the first novel of the "thrilling" Harry Bosch series (New York Times Book Review).

For maverick LAPD homicide detective Harry Bosch, the body in the drainpipe at Mulholland Dam is more than another anonymous statistic. This one is personal...because the murdered man was a fellow Vietnam "tunnel rat" who had fought side by side with him in a hellish underground war. Now Bosch is about to relive the horror of Nam. From a dangerous maze of blind alleys to a daring criminal heist beneath the city, his survival instincts will once again be tested to their limit. Pitted against enemies inside his own department and forced to make the agonizing choice between justice and vengeance, Bosch goes on the hunt for a killer whose true face will shock him.

Impressed? Ace detective Harry Bosch is also on the case in other exciting Michael Connelly crime-fiction novels.

Riviting Brash Bosch one definitely not to miss.

First may I say Dick Hill is an incredible narrator. This is one in a series of Harry Bosch books and all of them are excellent. This one has some twists that are unexpected and should keep you on your toes. I look forward to more Harry Bosch stories in the future. and I enjoy the Harry Bosch series on TV. Jerry Edwards

Dick Hill narrator

What does Dick Hill bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Dick Hill is a perfect match for Harry Bosch books, as Craig Wasson is for James Ellroy.

I enjoy a book that you can't determine the "who did it" half way through. This is one of those books. I was surprised and I like being surprised.

Good Procedural, Slightly Bosch Finish

For its first 12 hours, Harry Bosch's debut outing weaves a good police procedural with nicely developed characters and an interesting Vietnam War back story. What more can you ask for in a modern murder thriller?

Just one thing: a better ending than a talking villain (or two) explaining everything while wasting just enough time for our hero to snatch victory out of the jaws of defeat. The last 90 minutes is all that, and that cost Connelly a star in what was going to be a 5-star rating (let's call it a 4 1/2 rounded down to a 4).

I had a moment of hope when I saw there were still two hours left after the talking villain was done, expecting another twist in the tale, as I had previously experienced with Connelly's The Poet. But that time was spent on another talker explaining away the remaining plot points.

But don't let this single criticism dissuade you. Otherwise, and until then, this is a Class A listen, and maybe you're not as sensitive as I am to this overworked device.
