Publisher's summary

An LAPD homicide detective must choose between justice and vengeance as he teams up with the FBI in the first novel of the "thrilling" Harry Bosch series (New York Times Book Review).

For maverick LAPD homicide detective Harry Bosch, the body in the drainpipe at Mulholland Dam is more than another anonymous statistic. This one is personal...because the murdered man was a fellow Vietnam "tunnel rat" who had fought side by side with him in a hellish underground war. Now Bosch is about to relive the horror of Nam. From a dangerous maze of blind alleys to a daring criminal heist beneath the city, his survival instincts will once again be tested to their limit. Pitted against enemies inside his own department and forced to make the agonizing choice between justice and vengeance, Bosch goes on the hunt for a killer whose true face will shock him.

Impressed? Ace detective Harry Bosch is also on the case in other exciting Michael Connelly crime-fiction novels.

Great beginning of the series

Well worth reading and the audio book better than most. Highly recommended by those that enjoy reading and then listening to an audio performance. As a writer it adds an additional perspective. Enjoy!

Another good Harry Bosch mystery

What did you like best about this story?

This is my 3rd book in this series that I have read. I enjoy the Harry Bosch stories but haven't been reading them in order. This was a great read with lots of typical twists and turns of Bosch books you are used too. I had read "Nine Dragons" before this book (#14 in the series I think) and in Black Echo I got find out the back story of Bosch and Elanor Wish and their daughter, who plays a big role in Nine Dragons. This book was exciting and fast paced, with a couple good laughs along the way and an ending that kept me guessing.

1970's - 1980's setting, well worth a listen

Tough as nails protagonist, Bosch, narrated by the fantastic Dick Hill. Set in a 70-80s time frame underlined by the stark absence of the forensics and spy tech prevalent in recent entertainment media. Enjoyable listen with some expected/anticipated twists and turns--insights and tie ins to Bosch's early life as a tunnel Rat in 'Nam.

LOVE Harry Bosch

I started with the later books and fell in love with them so I had to go back to the beginning. Michael Connley is a true story teller that can spin a mystery that keeps you guessing. The characters are interesting and believable. Can't wait to listen to every one of them!

Intrigued by the TV show, I had to read the series.

I am intrigued by Harry. He detests the bureaucratic dung heap under which he works but excels in his job despite them. So familiar.
I would recommend this to anyone who considers, or is working in, a similar environment.
The narration was good. Even the pacing was on time.
