Publisher's summary

An LAPD homicide detective must choose between justice and vengeance as he teams up with the FBI in the first novel of the "thrilling" Harry Bosch series (New York Times Book Review).

For maverick LAPD homicide detective Harry Bosch, the body in the drainpipe at Mulholland Dam is more than another anonymous statistic. This one is personal...because the murdered man was a fellow Vietnam "tunnel rat" who had fought side by side with him in a hellish underground war. Now Bosch is about to relive the horror of Nam. From a dangerous maze of blind alleys to a daring criminal heist beneath the city, his survival instincts will once again be tested to their limit. Pitted against enemies inside his own department and forced to make the agonizing choice between justice and vengeance, Bosch goes on the hunt for a killer whose true face will shock him.

Impressed? Ace detective Harry Bosch is also on the case in other exciting Michael Connelly crime-fiction novels.

Great book, narrator irritated me

For the most part, I really enjoyed this book, and initially I liked the narrator. But the way he read the female lead's part became more and more irritating the longer I listened. He would have served the character--and story--better if he'd read her as the strong character she should have been, rather than the girly ingenue he mustered up as his "woman voice." In other words, instead of making "female" the most important part of her and defaulting to probably the only way he could figure out to do a woman's voice, he should have recognized that since she was an FBI agent who could swear with the best of them and was in no way virginal, she probably should not have sounded like a damsel in distress.

Add to that the voices of the teenagers (idiotic, whiny boy, instead of sullen or guarded and airhead, whiny girl rather than the street savvy and tough young woman she was) and any adult who wasn't white-collar (idiotic, whiny boy voice again), and by the middle of the book I was tempted to just stop listening.

Enjoyed the story, so trying the next...I hope the narrator's voice has matured.

Really like this!

I got this after watching Bosch on Amazon Video. I really enjoyed the show (new season please!!) and this book was so entertaining that I'm going to start listening and reading the other books in the series.

Not for heavy thinkers, but pure entertainment that's not silly or patronizing.

Narration was great, too.

A fun Listen

I usually don't go in for crime mysteries too much, but Audible was having a sale so what the heck. I was not disappointed. The story is about a smart street detective and a case he works with the FBI. This detective has a past which is revealed throughout the book and it is him against the world at times. It was fast paced and I enjoyed it a great deal. Dick Hill did the narration which is also a huge plus.

My first, but not last encounter with Mr. Bosch

I normally don't enjoy police procedurals, especially the kind that run on TV, and especially those dealing with grisly murders. But the character of Harry Bosch pulled me in, right away. I love learning his history and how he was connected to the victim. And how he connected with all the people he meets -- an intense guy, but with a noble heart under the gruff, chain-smoking exterior.

A great contrast to my favorite PI pair, Robert Crais' Elvis Cole and Joe Pike. These guys need to meet up in LA for a big ol' mystery!
