Publisher's summary

In a case that spans 20 years, Harry Bosch links the bullet from a recent crime to a file from 1992, the killing of a young female photographer during the L.A. riots. Harry originally investigated the murder, but it was then handed off to the Riot Crimes Task Force and never solved.

Now Bosch's ballistics match indicates that her death was not random violence, but something more personal, and connected to a deeper intrigue. Like an investigator combing through the wreckage after a plane crash, Bosch searches for the "black box", the one piece of evidence that will pull the case together.

Riveting and relentlessly paced, The Black Box leads Harry Bosch, "one of the greats of crime fiction" (New York Daily News), into one of his most fraught and perilous cases.

Can’t get enough of the Harry Bosch books by Michael Connelly.

Another thrilling unsolved crime, this time from the early 90s. Bosch faces many obstacles in his pursuit of the truth, and the twists and turns are fascinating. Can’t wait to listen to the next book in the series.

Harry Bosch working Cold Cases from his own Past

Love Harry showing his vulnerability but take no prisoner’s attitude.
Did not enjoy the reading since it felt like reading. I stuck it out because I love the series.

Good fiction

We all know if police officers did what Harry did, not only would they be fired they would be prosecuted. Doesn't change the enjoyment factor for me.

Not as good as his middle books, but still a good story. The focus is back on Harry solving a case written off by everyone.

The thing is Harry is getting older and where there used to be other characters as good and selfless; the last few books show him to be a kind of reckless lone wolf. He has less and less redeeming qualities as a person. Even the interaction with his daughter shows him to be paranoid and untrusting.

So do I like this because I love Harry warts and all, or because its a good book... I believe it's a good story, but he is becoming harder like a crotchety old guy.

Didn't enjoy the narrator

If you could sum up The Black Box in three words, what would they be?

Classic Harry Bosch

What did you like best about this story?

I love Harry's fascination with each case. He's like a dog with a bone; he just can't let it go.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

At times, this narrator was very monotone and mechanical, especially at the beginning of the book. It did get a little better as the book went on (or I just got used to it), but I did initially consider moving on to something else without finishing. At times, it sounded almost automated.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

It tugged at my heart strings when Harry agonized over his daughter. He wants to always do the right thing, but often times is not sure what that really is. Parents deal with that on a daily basis. Especially with teens.

Any additional comments?

This is a classic Harry Bosch novel. No surprises, but that is a comfort in itself. You get what you were expecting.
