Publisher's Summary

Ed Bishop stars as Philip Marlowe in this powerfully atmospheric BBC Radio 4 dramatisation of Raymond Chandler's novel about the cynical, world-weary, wise-cracking shamus whose honesty in a dishonest world sent him down the mean streets again and again in search of some kind of justice.

General Sternwood's daughters came in both the colours of trouble - blonde and brunette - and they had all the usual vices. With four million dollars behind them, blackmail was only a matter of time. And blackmail can be murder.

    "Beautifully acted Chandler"

this audio version of 'the big sleep' was one that i had heard previously on bbc radio 7, and i thought it an absolute delight. the dialogue was steely and chilling in places (the character canino was brilliantly realised by peter marinker)and even the plot was convoluted, it all came together at the end. ed bishop was superb as marlowe (who scored high for insubordination); my only quibble was with the actress who voiced vivian regan, she did not sound like a woman in her late 20's, rather a woman in her late 40's. other than that, a fine audiobook that rewards you on repeated listening.
