Publisher's summary

Who's afraid?

Alex Cross battles the most ruthless and powerful killer he has ever encountered: a predator known only as the Wolf.

Alex Cross' first case since joining the FBI has his new colleagues stymied. Across the country, men and women are being kidnapped in broad daylight and then disappearing completely. These people are not being taken for ransom, Alex realizes. They are being bought and sold. And it looks like a shadowy figure known as the Wolf, a master criminal who has brought a new reign of terror to organized crime, is behind this business in which ordinary men and women are sold as slaves.

You're afraid.

Even as he admires the FBI's vast resources, Alex grows impatient with the Bureau's clumsiness and caution when it is time to move. A lone wolf himself, he has to go out on his own in order to track the Wolf and try to rescue some of the victims while they are still alive.

As the case boils over, Alex is in hot water at home, too. His ex-fiancie, Christine Johnson, comes back into his life-and not for the reasons Alex might have hoped.

Full of the unexpected twists and heartrending surprises that James Patterson delivers better than any other suspense writer alive, The Big Bad Wolf is an unforgettable thriller.

The feeling of discovering that your favorite new listen is actually the start of a series is euphoric. That you can immediately hit play and re-enter a beloved new world, or love story, or era from history is a gift to the devoted listener. But how to pick just 100 of these unique and immersive listening journeys? We defined a series as having a minimum of three books, and—after some debate—we decided the titles had to be anchored in fiction. From YA to horror to historical fiction, from fresh voices to seminal tales, hours of discovery await.

Good listen, no resolution

Enjoyed the book, good pace but no conclusion. I hope the fate of the main character is resolved in the next book. I felt like they cut the last 4 chapters and left me feeling cheated.

Good story; annoying dramatic music

Most of JPs audio books don’t have the annoying ‘dramatic’ music at chapters and
other points. I found that aspect unnecessary.

Wolf? Wolf? Wolf?

Interesting listen, fast paced and full of action. Didn't like the ending, but it was a believeable one.

Twists and turns

Patterson always keeps listeners on their toes. He lets you think you have it figured out and then throws a spin. Love the cross series!!

Good story; annoying musical background

Patterson's Alex Cross series has not lost its bite. It remains fresh and entertaining. The Audible.com production includes somewhat annoying and distracting background music, sometimes unsuitable to the content.

Spinning wheels

Right off, we were introduced to the Wolf, who intends to become THE Godfather. The next hours of listening are filled with false trails in Cross's and the FBI's efforts to discover the Wolf's identity. After so much time was spent on the effort, I'd hoped for more disclosure at the end. But I felt the brakes engage in my expectation when I looked at the time remaining and we were back to the custody issue -- and I sighed. I felt the last little bit with the mini-army attacking the convoy was just thrown in. Nothing was learned about the Wolf that we didn't already know. so that plot ended pretty much where it began.

Fernandez and O'Hare did a very good job with narration (but maybe the Russian accents could have used a little more attention). And the sound effects were soft, not distracting at all.

Alex Cross fans will no doubt overlook the shortcomings. And being one of them, it's on to the next one!
