Publisher's summary

Newly elected, Jack Ryan has found that being President is not easy: domestic pitfalls await him at every turn; there's a revolution in Liberia; the Asian economy is going down the tubes; and now, in Moscow, someone may have tried to assassinate the chairman of the SVR - the former KGB - with a rocket-propelled grenade. Were the potential assassins political enemies, the Russian Mafia, or disaffected former KGB? Or is something far more dangerous at work here? While Ryan dispatches his most trusted eyes and ears, including black ops specialist John Clark, to find out the truth of the matter, forces in China are moving ahead with a plan of truly audacious proportions. If they succeed, the world will never look the same again.

Ever a Clancy Fan

As is evidenced by my other reviews, I'm hardly a book critic or a literary connoisseur, but I sure do love me some Jack Ryan. The plot arc that starts in Sum of Fears finds ends well in The Bear and the Dragon.

It appears that several of these Jack Ryan books are available in duplicate versions, ones read by Scott Brick and one by Michael Pritchard. I enjoy both authors, but suggest that as much as you can, stick to one narrator or the other; it does greatly help with the flow.

This is a great book

This story is about Russia, China, and the USA , human rights and the treatment of citizens...a whole lot of history, and predictions for the future.
The story highlights ... Greed, a country on the fringe of becoming economically stable, and unusuall alliances ... Something here for all readers...lots of emotional flares... And vulnerablity by strong people.
Worth a credit any day
Michael Prichard turns in a great job reading

Older White American Male's Fantasy

Good story - author's fantasy re if he was in charge. Older white American male's view of the world and himself.

Length over 42 hours is a great deal.

Unrealistic portrayal of US financial situation and America in general.

Interesting info about Chairman Mao's sexual perversions.
Sad info about abortions in China and USA. Appreciate author's dislike of abortion, i.e. legal murder.

Dislike all the cursing, much disrespectful for Almighty God and not needed for story line.
Lots of smoking - think Clancy wanted to bring back acceptability of smoking.

Several jokes and situations laugh out loud funny!

Annoying and incorrect sermon about why bad things happen to good people and about Jesus' resurrecting Lazarus.

Mr. Clancy used this book as a soap box for his pet ideas. Interesting look into his mind.

Plenty of racism, use of chinks, polacks, ivan, ragheads, etc. Author tried to be open minded about blacks.

Lots of male organ talk.

I recommend this book because of the length and subject matter of Russia, China, USA, Taiwan and their rulers.

Good Book

I will start off by pointing out that this is my favorite Tom Clancy novel and I was thrilled to find it in an unabridged format, so I knew I really liked the story before even starting to listen. The reader started out really poorly. It almost felt like it was an electronic voice reading and hard to listen to. However, as the book went on (and there was PLENTY of time for it to "go on") he seemed to settle into the story more and, by the end, was giving a solid performance.

Good, yet formulaic and predictable plot.

A good overall plot, but all its twists and turns could be seen a mile away, at least for someone who read a few Clancy books before.

There are few books this good

This is such an excellent book. Tom Clancy has a real talent for story telling and in The Bear and The Dragon he show off his talent to an extreme degree. I rated the performance somewhat lower than the story and the overall. The reason for that is because of Micheal Prichard's dry style of delivery. Other than that the only problem with this book is that knowing Tom Clancy books this book is very predictable, absolutely no mystery. Still having said that it is great fun to root for the good guys knowing full well that they will meet with total success. So if you like real flag wavers then this book should please you.

Great Story !!

Would you consider the audio edition of The Bear and the Dragon to be better than the print version?

It's too close to call which is best, but the audio really shortens the drive to work.
