Publisher's summary

Frank Pollard awakens in an alley, knowing nothing but his name - and that he is in great danger. Having taken refuge in a motel, he wakes again only to find his hands covered in blood. As far as he knows, he's no killer. But whose blood is this, and how did it get there?

Over the next few days Frank develops a fear of sleep, because each time he wakes, he discovers strange objects in his hands and pockets - objects far more frightening than blood.

Husband-and-wife detective team Bobby and Julie Dakota specialize in high-ticket corporate security investigations, but when a distraught and desperate Frank Pollard begs them to watch over him, they can't refuse. Out of compassion - and curiosity - they agree to get to the bottom of his mysterious, amnesiac fugues.

It seems a simple job: just follow a client who wants to be watched and tell him where he winds up. But as the Dakotas begin to discover where their client goes when he sleeps, they are drawn slowly into ever-darkening realms where they encounter the ominous figure stalking Frank. Their lives are threatened, as is that of Julie's gentle, Down's-syndrome brother, Thomas.

To Thomas, death is "the bad place" from which there is no return. But Julie and Bobby - and their tortured client - ultimately learn that equally bad places exist in the world of the living, places so steeped in evil that, in contrast ,death seems almost a relief.

Critic reviews

"A master storyteller, sometimes humorous, sometimes shocking, but always riveting. His characters sparkle with life. And his fast-paced plots are wonderfully fiendish, taking unexpected twists and turns." ( The San Diego Union-Tribune)

One of the most intriguing books ever!

I absolutely loved it, the readers gave it sooo much more, and their voices and mannerisms were spot on, I had a vivid picture of ea character. The story was twisted, crazy good and I loved loved loved it. I wish Dean would write a prequal to it... that would be an amazing story. It's dark, not for everyone but I live the way good triumphs over evil in the end and how all characters had a story and place in the story, that all tied together to help Frank, even if they perished. Darkness, Fireflies... Velocity...omg...I loved that! I was startled and laughing at the same time. Dean is an Utter Genius.

WARPED, SICK and WEIRD

I have over 500 books on Audible and this was the sickest one of all. I loved it.
Warning...not for kids or even YA. Adults only but if you are warped adult you will love it.

Wonderful Story

The story is very well written, has fast action with great suspense.

Dean Koontz did a great job writing this book while keeping up with the different paths that it took with the different characters.

The Narrators did a great job. The story has a lot of different twists & turns along with alot of emotions that you'll feel for different characters. You may feel that the story jumps quite a bit (as I did) tho the more that you listen the more hooked you will get and not want to put it down.

I listened to it a few times since it was so good. The voices of the narrators did such a wonderful job they kept you intently listening as well.

Excellent Read!!

This is one of the best Koontz novels to date!! I think this book is brilliantly well written!. Koontz kept me anticipating on what would come next - each character was fully developed in this story. There are plenty of twists and turns to keep you rivited until the end. I highly recommend this book.

Koontz fan

I read this many years ago and decided to walk down memory lane and listen to it I'm glad I did. Koontz has such detail in his books I tend to speed read over a lot of it. When you listen to a book, you hear it all. I had forgotten ( or read over it too fast) a lot of this book so it felt completely new. Good narrators too for the most part.
