Publisher's summary

Every politician has a secret. And when the daughter of a politically connected family is kidnapped abroad, America's new president will agree to anything - even a deadly and ill-advised rescue plan - in order to keep his secret hidden.

A new administration and a new approach to dealing with America's enemies have left covert counterterrorism operative Scot Harvath without a job. But when American doctor Julia Gallo is kidnapped in Afghanistan, the terms of her ransom leave the president with only one course of action. In a dangerous assignment that the United States government will deny any knowledge of, Scot Harvath must secretly infiltrate Kabul's notorious Policharki Prison and free the man the kidnappers demand as ransom -- al-Qaeda mastermind, Mustafa Khan.

But when Harvath arrives, he quickly learns that there is more to the kidnapping than anyone dares to admit. And as the subterfuge is laid bare, Harvath must examine his own career of hunting down and killing terrorists, and ask himself if he has what it takes to help one of the world's worst go free.

Brimming with the kind of ripped-from-the-headlines authenticity Brad Thor's internationally bestselling novels are known for, The Apostle doubles down on the blockbuster success of The Last Patriot and reaffirms Thor's status as the master of the political thriller.

Still breathing? Take another thrill ride with superagent Scot Harvath.

Mr. Thor Never Disappoints

Another kick ass soaked patriotic thriller/love letter to America's finest Soldiers, Sailors,Airmen and MARINES). From the Scot Harvath typical badassery to the secret service side story all culminating in one gnarly (won't spoil it) ending...I couldn't stop this one until the end...

A New Voice For Scot

The first very noticeable difference in book eight of the Scot Harvath series is a change in the narrator. Armand Schultz is a welcome change and does an outstanding job delivering the narrative in this outing. Looking ahead, I see Mr. Schultz will continue to be the narrator.

With The Apostle, we find Scot as a private citizen having left his former government roles. That said, it is not long before he is drawn back in as the daughter of an elite journalist is captured in Afghanistan and Harvath is called upon to rescue the daughter by releasing a captured known terrorist in return. Since this is strickly agains US Policy, Scot is on his own heavily funded by the wealthy mother. At the same time, it is revealed that the new President, a moderate, has been coerced by the mother to make this happen because she knows a deep secret that would end his presidency before it even gets rolling.

While Harvath goes about chasing down the whereabouts of both the captured terrorist and the daughter in the middle east, back in the USA, a secret service agent is working unofficially to unravel the President's dark secret. Both plots work well together as one chapter moves Scot forward while the next uncovers the Presidential secret.

Again, Mr. Shultz did a fine job of narrating throughout and I look forward to his next reading of the series. Overall, this is well done entry into the series. My one very minor complaint is the extra time spent discussing military hardware and some redundancy in the dialogue. Not enough to really interfere with the overall enjoyment as I move on to the next in the series.

Storyline

The storyline was good but lacked action. I would have liked more details especially additional extreme prejudice.

Back to action

Would you consider the audio edition of The Apostle to be better than the print version?

No

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

First time I've been able to set a Thor book aside and come back later.

What didn’t you like about Armand Schultz’s performance?

Was that a performance? Armand Schultz reads like the first audio performers did...just reads...listeners demand so much more now. There was no excitement, no ability to tell who was speaking, no change in timbre. He reads fine, gets all the words pronounced correctly and enunciates. Ho hum.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

There have been weekends when I have downloaded and read/listened to one Brad Thor book after another. I listened to this one, and forgot about it....had to back up some to remember what had been going on before I finished it the next weekend on another drive. His last one or two got a little "out there" so I was glad he was back to some action, but still just wanted to slap a couple of the players around and tell them to grow up instead of building a novel around them.
