Publisher's summary

“A winner...combines the pace and style of Brown’s Da Vinci Code and the densely plotted espionage of Daniel Silva’s Gabriel Allon novels.” (The Florida Times-Union)

Atlanta judge Rachel Cutler loves her job and her kids, but her life takes a dark turn when her father dies under strange circumstances, leaving behind clues to a secret about one of the greatest treasures ever made by man. Forged of the exquisite gem, the Amber Room inexplicably disappeared sometime during World War II.

Determined to solve its mysteries, Rachel takes off for Germany with her ex-husband, Paul, close behind. Before long, they’re in over their heads. Locked into a treacherous game with professional killers, Rachel and Paul find themselves on a collision course with the forces of greed, power, and history itself.

Critic reviews

"Sexy, illuminating, and confident. The Amber Room is my kind of thriller: a globe-trotting treasure hunt packed with exotic locales, sumptuous art, and ruthless villains. Steve Berry writes with the self-assured style of a veteran." (Dan Brown, author of The Da Vinci Code)

“Magnificently engrossing, with wonderful characters and a plot that speeds, twists, and turns. Pure intrigue, pure fun.” (Clive Cussler)

“Steve Berry has written a tremendous first novel. He weaves vivid details into a lightning quick read.” (Stephen Frey, author of Silent Partner)

Strong storyline with even stronger language!

Interesting and well researched. However, Berry seems overly and unnecessarily obsessed with sex and crude language. Berry leaves little to the imagination and takes what otherwise should have been a great historical mystery appropriate for all audiences and turns it into a mildly pornographic thriller.

Thoroughly enjoyable!

Well read by Scott Brick and a thoroughly enjoyable read. I particularily like Steve Berry's approach to mixing historical fact with fictional characters and events to make a believable story. His books are quite "formulae" driven but I like them anyway.

Intriguing topic

Basically a good book but I was glad to be finished. I did not care for some of the writing. Narrator is excellent.

Incredible!

Would you consider the audio edition of The Amber Room to be better than the print version?

I really enjoyed Scott's narration of this title. The accents and how he changed the speed and tone of his voice brought the novel to life in my mind.

Who was your favorite character and why?

My favourite character may have been the bad guy, Noel. I loved the accent and he always sounded so sinister. And highly offended to hear that his competitor was trying to kill him.

What about Scott Brick’s performance did you like?

Everything! The accents were excellent and the way he changed his speed of reading made the novel incredibly enjoyable.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No. It was still too long for that.

Brick is Solid, Story Lost Me

Scott Brick saved this read for me. If not for his narration I wouldn't have finished.

Can’t put it down

Very intriguing. Not only the narrator but the story and the author’s style of writing keeps your interest from the beginning. Look forward to another book by Steve Berry or a book narrated by Scott Brick.

Starts Out Well... But then... AAARGH!

Good grabber at the beginning. Stays strong through the first quarter then... then... Berry maybe went on a trip and phoned the rest in to someone who didn't give a d*mn. Brick is portentous, but then that is his principle talent. Once again Brick reminds me of the background music accompanying a Univision TV drama. You know where the characters are doing one ordinary thing and the instrument noises are fired up to suggest doomsday will break in only instants? His tone always foreshadows impending awfulness is only a frame or two away. But in this case, perhaps Brick's doing his best with the stuff that Berry gave him?

Terrible performance by Scott Brick

Scott Brick's two mode delivery gets on my nerves. Either he spends hours whining or he's deadpan. Unfortunately, this style completely fouls up the authors attempts at character development. Fewer audiobooks narrated by Scott Brick would improve the genre.

Amen to last reviewer

Not a well written book. Truly hated the shallow characters asnd couldn't believe how stupid they were. Still a bit of fun as the story is ok.
