Publisher's summary

With Reacher, number-one New York Times best-selling author Lee Child has created “a series that stands in the front rank of modern thrillers” (The Washington Post).

Everything starts somewhere....

For elite military cop Jack Reacher, that somewhere was Carter Crossing, Mississippi, way back in 1997. A lonely railroad track. A crime scene. A coverup.

A young woman is dead, and solid evidence points to a soldier at a nearby military base. But that soldier has powerful friends in Washington.

Reacher is ordered undercover - to find out everything he can, to control the local police, and then to vanish. Reacher is a good soldier. But when he gets to Carter Crossing, he finds layers no one saw coming, and the investigation spins out of control.

Local sheriff Elizabeth Deveraux has a thirst for justice - and an appetite for secrets. Uncertain they can trust one another, Reacher and Deveraux reluctantly join forces. Reacher works to uncover the truth, while others try to bury it forever. The conspiracy threatens to shatter his faith in his mission, and turn him into a man to be feared.

A novel of unrelenting suspense that could only come from the pen of number-one New York Times bestselling author Lee Child, The Affair is the start of the Reacher saga, a thriller that takes Reacher - and his readers - right to the edge... and beyond.

Take another thrill ride with Jack Reacher.

Excellent book and reader. POORLY abridged.

Poorly abridged. I kept feeling like I had missed key points. I had because they had been abridged.

Dont bother

I am a huge Jack Reacher fan. The narration was horrible on this feature. I returned the book.

Jack does it again.

A very good reacher read. He gets the girl, he get justice, and what he deserves in the end. Reacher jus seems to fit in that small town with a military base. Very interesting at the end - love? Duty? Good suspense and well portrayed audio.

The Narrator really threw me

This wasn't a bad read, although not one of Child's best.

The problem for me was the narrator. I have never come so close to stop listening to an audiobook early before.

I am not sure what it was but the bounce didn't suit the character. He also often seemed out of breath.

The story often seemed to be disconnected - perhaps sloppy abridgement?

Finally- we know….

Great book to fill in the narrative on why Reacher leaves the army. Shorter than the others but a good story all the same.

Love the characters

Per usual Reacher accomplishes his goal and keeps the story alive. The mystery keeps unfolding until the very end.

Great story. Quick read.

I enjoyed the story and the spectacularly beautiful women nicely described, both living and dead, by the author.

Primordial Reacher

A great origin story! Jack Reacher becomes the “white knight” that we come to know in future adventures.

Abridged version !!!!!!!!!

The Audible App is either incapable of or so non-intuitive that I cannot view an author’s work specifically a series in order, any order: publication or story. Case in point, this Reacher series. So, I have to go to an outside source for either, then search the audible for the next book. Well, doing these extra steps caused a disappointing outcome… I bought the abridgment. There was No indication that it was an abridged version. Further, back in the day, you could return a book. Well so far on the app, can’t figure out how. Also, the only way I found out it was an abridgment was the announcement AT THE END of the book, Not the beginning or anywhere in text about the book. So, even if I figure out how to return it, the unabridged version is ruined because I listened to this milk toast version already! In hindsight I should have known by the spoon feeding no unseen twists, turns, or surprises. A real disappointment.
If you like listening to a story with little to no challenge to the listener then this is a fine listen. The storyline is in line with the series… but don’t expect to do any mental lifting yourself. There’s no “who done it here.” It’s obvious from the start, and there’s no clever maneuvering usual in his resolution but that’s what you get when you suffer an abridged book.
