Publisher's Summary

Manuela, the daughter of a wealthy couple from Bari, disappeared without trace months before and the police have closed their investigation, to the parents' despair. Counsellor Guerrieri reluctantly takes on an unusual assignment: to seek new evidence to force the police to reopen the case. A job more suitable to a private detective but a job that leads him to Nadia, a former client, a fascinating woman with an ambiguous past and to the tempting Caterina, Manuela's best friend, exquisitely too young for the jaded Guerrieri...

"Ciao, Guido - Last Book of the Series"

I have thoroughly enjoyed listening to this Italian legal mystery series. Yet, I would only recommend this 4 book series to listeners that love character driven stories. Because I love the character, Guido Guerrieri so much, I enjoy the numerous back stories and long dialogues. The first three books were explorations into the legal system of Italy. Guerrieri takes on impossible cases and resolves them intellectually and with lots of work.

This final installment is not a legal story as Guerrieri has been hired by a fellow attorney on behalf of his wealthy clients to solve the year-long disappearance of their daughter, Manuela. The mystery is not hard to solve, but I didn't care because I got to know Guerrieri even better. These stories contain so much warmth and humor.

Sean Barrett is the narrator throughout this series and does an excellent job. I hope there will soon be another book as the ending felt like this story could go on and on.

I'm a narrator for Audible and a lover of recorded fiction in the mystery/thriller genre. A great book needs a great narrator.

"A lawyer that you can like"

Temporary Perfections is the 4th book in the Guido Guerrieri Series by Gianrico Carofiglio. Guido is a criminal lawyer in Bari Italy. Bari is a coastal town on the Adriatic coast and it is really beautiful if you ever get a chance to travel there. I have listened to each of the books in the series and have come too really like Guido. He has his flaws, he is getting older, and these books are not action novels, but books about a man who cares about the law, about doing the right thing, and about his friends. He has a great sense of humor and sarcasm, and chooses to not take himself too seriously. If you enjoy legal books like those written by John Grisham, but would like a European flavor, consider this series. Gianrico Carafiglio brings to life living in Italy, the Italian criminal courts and the humanity of a decent man trying to do his best. I would recommend starting with the first book in the series, Involuntary Witness. This is the last book that has been translated to English but I am hoping that I casi dell'avvocato Guerrieri will come soon.

Beautifully written. Concentrates more on the character's personal story than on the mystery. I recommend this book as a relaxing listen. Great reader!

    Story
"Temptation meets the mid age Italian male profession"
Would you listen to Temporary Perfections: Guido Guerrieri Series, Book 4 again? Why?

The narrator captures the essence of the Italian male attorney and the writing is flawless, with complexity of the lead character so yes! It's easy to listen to again.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Endlessly self reflective, the lead character feels tempted, knows he isn't always moral and gives in and never pretends he is moral. I find that interesting and rare.

What does Sean Barrett bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

The level of awareness the lead character has about himself is really unusual. It's a terrific inside look at this man who is stunningly human, and complex.. Sean Barrett is bringing something rare and interesting to story plus there is always some sort of mystery and also the Italian court. I feel I have been to Italy and bored outside of the courtroom waiting ..

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I didn't have an extreme reaction to this book and I loved that. I like this book because it's easy to listen to and I didn't get sad .. I was amused and several points but in an easy calmly entertained way

An intelligent mystery where the idea and dialogue are the most interesting
The murder easily takes a baCk seat to the introspective philosophizing
    Holds interest
    And is a fun listen
    I can recommend with pleasure

Good writing and mystery / intrigue do not always go together. Carofiglio crafts his stories with precision. His characters are sharply drawn. You care what happens. What more do you want for a book?

"Great series with a wonderful narrator!"

This whole series is excellent. I wish Carofiglio would write faster! The Italian court system provides an interesting and unusual backdrop compared to the typical legal mystery. The translation is excellent and you never feel that you are reading something that wasn't intended to be in English. And I love this narrator. The main character is flawed in ways that make you care about him.

    "Great storyteller"

Sean Barrett is a great reader bringing compassion to the characters that the author, Guerrieri creates. This story has a weaker storyline than the others but the unrelated tales interwoven within deepen the interest of the listener. We enjoyed this story and hope the author beings us another soon.

"too slow and too much personal stuff"
What disappointed you about Temporary Perfections: Guido Guerrieri Series, Book 4?

too slow... the story seems to center on the missing of a girl but the main character gets involved with two peripheral women and the story bogs down such a pace that the tortoise wins every single race

What was most disappointing about Gianrico Carofiglio’s story?

Get on withthe missing girl part ... yes, i know that Guido is sexually deprived but for gods sake sleep with someone and tell us the main story.

What about Sean Barrett’s performance did you like?

he has done a grand job -- how did he survive the text?

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

disappointment after listening to the prior three novels which were superior

    Any additional comments?

    nope

    "Guido Guerrieri"

I continue to be entranced by Guido Guerrieri, Carofiglio's ever-so-slighty cynical Bari lawyer who has moved into becoming a bit of an amateur sleuth. Guerrieri's internal world, as he struggles to make sense of his activities, provides an intriguing view into the thoughts and feelings of a man in his 40s who has made something of a mess of his personal life, while enjoying some professional success.

Sean Barrett is a wonderful narrator, and I long for the next Guerrieri. Well done Carofiglio!

    "Close to Perfection"

A very enjoyable listen particularly as read by Sean Barrett. This is not the book to choose if you're looking for a fast-paced action detective story. He does a lot of reminiscing and goes off into a lot of philosophical asides.

I personally liked this a lot, but I can understand someone getting bored by it or wishing the action unfolded a bit quicker.

I am looking forward to the next Carofiglio novel.

    "Great series"

I love Guido! He's such a messed up character it adds to the story. I have listened to the whole series and loved every one - probably because Sean Barrett does such an excellent job as usual with the narration.

These make a pleasant change from my normal suspense gory thrillers, are more courtroom drama but to add to that this time Guido plays detective. Great story but possibly wouldn't as good be without Sean Barrett.

"Just slightly deviated from the golden path"

The author has gone slightly off track in this 4th book of a tremendous series. Whereas Guido's asides about his past and his flaws added a warm personal touch to the clever courtroom arguments, this book is so full of musings that in places they detract from the story altogether. Indeed Guido's humiliation on his trip to Rome was incredibly aggrevating and seemed somewhat out of character to me. If this sounds harsh it is only because I hope that Gianrico Carofiglio's agents do get to read some of his reader reviews and will firmly guide him back on the straight and narrow. If you have been following this series do get this book to keep yourself up to date - it's not so poor that you won't enjoy it. However, like me, I think you will hope book 5 gets back to stronger stuff and Guido's very special way of seeing new threads in the evidence.

My first taste of this writer, I found the story very good, but a little odd at times, giving obscure details unnecessarily. I enjoyed it in the most part, the main character was pleasant enough - though a bit daft/soft on occasions. Interesting setting and worth a listen.

    "Boring"

Not for me.....I found the book rather tedious .....it just seemed to go nowhere and there was far too much blathering on about stuff that had nothing to do with the plot. Suddenly you are at the end of the book and that's it!! Sean Barrett as ever narrates it beautifully ...unfortunately even his silky voice didn't help the very weak plot.
