Now what am I going to do?

I just finished the last book available in this series...I took a chance with an author that I was not familiar with and bought "Iron Lake" the first book in this series, 13 books and 6 weeks later I am finished and wishing that there was more. I had to renew my subscription early to get all of this series. I was thoroughly entertained with each and every chapter. I hope that you give this series a try.

It's Cork O'Conner!!!!!!

I wait in anticipation for William Kent Krueger to take Cork O’Conner on another journey in Tamarack Country. Obviously, I finished this in a few days. In this venture all the pieces are there for Cork to take his stand against evil in the defense of good. Henry (my personal favorite).., subzero temperatures.., the O’Conner family... the Ojibwe culture …. are all there again and I admit I just love it all. I could listen to David Chandler read the phone book.

BUT, I was a bit disappointed in this book. Again WWK choses to rehash a previous crime? If I am not mistaken, didn’t he do that in book twelve? Forgive me for complaining but, how many times are you going to purchase another greatest hits album…especially when a band member or two are missing?

While I am complaining…What great man sacrifices his family once again? In this chapter, Cork is putting the next generation in harm’s way. Seriously, after killing off spouses and lovers, putting offspring repeatedly at risk, WWK is including the infant grandchildren in his baggage? I think Cork O'Conner just crossed to below belt.

I will not be pre ordering my next in the series without a careful look at the summary.

Good but not great

I've enjoyed this series, but lately the books are not as exceptional. Case in point, Cork's children are older but there is no real character development; a teen age boy who is interested in girls - big surprise, a daughter who adopted a baby - wonderful but what about her career & social life and another daughter who is studying to become a nun but just realizes that she is gay when she is twenty something???. Then Cork is involved with a woman for years but he's not sure if it's serious so he jumps in bed with the first attractive woman he meets - not what we would expect from a mature father & grandfather in a small town. While a well written murder mystery is important, an interesting cast of believable characters are what drive me to read book after book in a series. I was disappointed when the book ended and I didn't learn anything new about the O'Connor family.

This book was very disappointing ruined the series

What disappointed you about Tamarack County?

I did not like the side plot with his daughter Ann and Sky it totally took away from the main plot and made for a very disappointing listen. .

Would you ever listen to anything by William Kent Krueger again?

I have been a avid listener for sometime but after this book I would most likely not listen to or read any more of his books especially not in this series. I wish had not wasted my credit on this book.

Which scene was your favorite?

The narration was good and I was really getting into the first part but after I saw where the side plot was going it ruined the rest of the story for me so I don't have a favorite scene.

What character would you cut from Tamarack County?

Sky and the the whole side plot.

Any additional comments?

I have listened to all of the books in this series and have enjoyed them so when I saw this one I purchased it right away and started listening. When you've listened to or read a few books by the same author you can start seeing where they are going in a book so when Sky appeared I realized where the side plot was headed before it was even apparent in the storyline and it just ruined the rest of the book. I could never get back into main story and found I could care less how it went which is saying a lot because I was totally enthralled in the other books of this series. Mr. Krueger if you wanted to write a book with a character like Sky and introduce such subject matter then you should have wrote a separate book for that genre and not ruined a great series like you did. Stephen had it right the first time Sky and the whole side plot did not need to be in Tamarack County.

Missed 5 stars because of narration.

Another fabulous chapter in the O’Connor Clan’s lives.
The storyline was solid, I thought, and the writing done very well. The dialogue is written realistically, just as people speak.
The problem is the narrator. He speaks so slowly, and seems to try and make every sentence a thing of great substance. This is especially true at the end of chapters.
If the narration is sped up, it’s tolerable. But nothing makes the dialogue tolerable from the characters. As I said, the dialogue is written with realism, but the narrator makes simple sentences by the characters sound snarky, and juvenile.
Seriously poor.
And pug-leeze! The word guillotine is NOT pronounced “gill a tine”, it’s pronounced “Geyatine”!
Hearing a common word like this while listening is head-shakingly disruptive. This is just one shocking example, there are many more. And when commonplace Spanish words are in the story, pronunciation butchery commences.
It would serve the author well to find another narrator, or at least insist that a producer edits the narration before publishing.

Loved it

I like all of Krueger's Cork books for probably the same reason so many others do -- lots of nature - and living WITHIN and WITH nature, not just looking at it. I also like the American Indian presence, showing appreciation and respect for that culture. For me, this is one of Krueger's best bcz plot and dynamic tension are there but the STORY isn't OVERRUN with run, chase, scare as the whole plot and action -- which Krueger does in several other of the Cork books. And there are, I think, more of the wisdom gems in this one - though unfortunately the narrator reads them in a way that makes them sound pompous and laughable but which, if spoken simply and quietly as the medicine man would, they would sound as they are - quiet deep truth. Fortunately, I can hear through this affected intonation (smile).

Research, study and skill put to the hights.

An example of the result of all of the skills of this author. Highly recommend this work and all of the series,

Least favorite

Annie's personal life wasn't a big surprise for me. And Cork's personal life is also not surprising & felt kind of tedious. What I couldn't tolerate was the animal cruelty. That's never ok, especially in the service of a story that just wasn't that good. I came very close to returning the title.

Everyone is better than the last. David Chandler is a wonderful narrator. And WKK is a great storyteller!

Great story!

All books in this series are fantastic! David Chandler does a perfect job narrating, as he always does. I can't listen to these fast enough! Looking forward to the next one!
