Publisher's summary

In 1969, a Navy SEAL, a trained assassin on a confidential mission, is dropped off in the Vietnam jungle. Days later, a U.S. gunboat returns to pick him up, but the boat's young captain panics under fire and leaves the SEAL behind.

Twenty years later, that young captain is now a Pentagon admiral as the SEAL returns to Washington, D.C. with his own career change: he's become a sweeper - a clandestine cleaner of secret messes. And he's come back to claim "some things of value" - things the admiral can't afford to lose.

Navy Commander Karen Lawrence - sharp, smart, and savvy - is assigned to investigate the bad things that start happening to the admiral. She finds herself caught between one man's boundless ambition and another's relentless quest for revenge.

Critic reviews

"Deutermann's inside knowledge of the Navy and Pentagon politics, coupled with his likable protagonists, make this a gripping new addition to his line of naval mysteries." ( Publishers Weekly)

Amazing Story, Very Gripping

This book reaches out and grabs you by the throat and holds you there until you finish it, very well done. I also love how he works in "historical" pieces as well, it's so believable it's crazy. Very intense, very entertaining, and most of all a very good story!

I was uncomfortable.

Some of the chapters were so well written and descriptive. It made me uncomfortable to listen to them. But of course, it was impossible to stop.

Ok But

The technical mistakes make this otherwise good story less interesting. A semiautomatic Glock will only fire one round if the trigger is held back. Poor research not artistic license. I find it frustrating when characters portrayed as highly competent repeatedly make silly mistakes. Dick Hill is one of my favorite narrators but, the synthesized voice was pretty much unintelligible. Good story made bad by poor research, poor character development and production.

Good but could’ve been great

Not a lot of action after initial chapter. The SEAL was not a sympathetic character despite what happened to him.

Another great book!

I am a big fan of this author. The plot is great, with attention keeping twists and turns. Characters are well developed and give some good surprises. I'm glad I got this book.

Deutermann's Best!!!!!

What did you love best about Sweepers?

I read Sweepers about ten years ago, followed by several other Deutermann books. Now that I am an audiobook fan, I went back to Sweepers because the plot has remained fresh in my mind over the years, and I wanted to hear Dick Hill read it. Great story, very believable. Love the way Deutermann, with a Navy career behind him, talks about the machinations of military protocol so knowledgeably. The sweeper is an erie character.

In my opinion, this is Deutermann's best, but that may be because it just appeals me. I was in Vietnam, so I could really identify with the whole situation involving the sweeper (not that I did anything like that). I have enjoyed his other books that I have read also, and just finished Zero Option on audio, which is also excellent.

What a Thriller

So suspenseful. On the edge of my seat with anticipation throughout the book. Dick Hill also continues to bring so much to the reading of the book

superb writer, enriching experience

Every one of Deutermann's novels have been absorbing, richly woven complex tapestries
that exhibit the intellect and superior craft of a master story teller. I've read every one, several, several times, the experience so rewarding. I find those that encompass naval history or the internal machinations of maritime culture to provide the most satisfaction, and me a 73 year old woman! Read this author. His work will enhance your life experience.
