Publisher's Summary

The new novel from New York Times bestselling author Joseph Finder, "the master of the modern thriller", about a father who is forced to make a choice with unspeakable consequences.

When single father Danny Goodman suddenly finds himself unable to afford the private school his teenage daughter adores, he has no one to turn to for financial support.

In what seems like a stroke of brilliant luck, Danny meets Thomas Galvin, the father of his daughter’s new best friend, who also happens to be one of the wealthiest men in Boston. Galvin is aware of Danny's situation and out of the blue offers a $50,000 loan to help Danny cover his daughter's tuition. Uncomfortable but desperate, Danny takes the money, promising to pay Galvin back.

What transpires is something Danny never imagined. The moment the money is wired into his account, the DEA comes knocking on his door. Danny's impossible choice: an indictment for accepting drug money that he can't afford to fight in court, or an unthinkably treacherous undercover assignment helping the government get close to his new family friend.

As Danny begins to lie to everyone in his life, including those he loves most in the world, he must decide once and for all who the real enemy is or risk losing everything - and everyone - that matters to him.

    "How did this get published?"

I've enjoyed many Joseph Finder books before, but this one was so bad I'm honestly surprised that it made it to press as is. I definitely think that if this had been submitted to publishers without Joseph Finder's name, it would never have been accepted.

The plot is not very original and you know how it will end from the very start, but that's not what disappointed me. The problem was that the author repeated the same unnecessary information over, and over, and over again. How many times in the same story do you have to hear about the fact that the milk is Lactaid when it has no bearing whatsoever on the story? When it states that he received a message to meet at the ihop of x street at 7:30pm, is it really necessary to make the next sentence "The meet had been set. They would meet at the ihop, on x street, at 7:30pm". That's how bad it was, and it was constant. It almost felt like a prank book.

I hate writing negative reviews, but I only do it in the hopes of saving someone a credit they will be sorry to loose.

How can the characters in this year's True Detective be worse? Ferrill is asexual, drunk, corrupt, a child abuser and worse!

    "Great Premise"

Finder's Paranoia, Company Man, Power Play are huge favorites of mine. Suspicion has a wonderful premise and a great plot with ingenious twists. But it falls short, lacking character development and lacking detail in essential areas of the crimes and way too much with side characters.

I found the narration almost juvenile in terms of the reader's true voice. At times with a few characters he does well enough, but on the whole he's disappointing.

The story is worth a listen, but it give this book 3 stars.

    "Not Worth Waiting For"

I pre-ordered this book because I have enjoyed Joseph Finder's books in the past. This one was a disappointment. The characters were shallow and the story totally unbelievable. It was very slow moving and not a book that I would ever recommend.

"Slow moving, took too long to get to any interest"
    What disappointed you about Suspicion?

Unlikable main character, lazy and stupid with no apparent strength.

Has Suspicion turned you off from other books in this genre?

No, and honestly I find the author's books very hit and miss, really like some but this was very disappointing.

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Steven Kearney?

    Narration was ok

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Suspicion?

Beginning, you felt the groundwork should have been much faster. I am not a writer so I will not presume to write but the book and characters did not draw me in.

    Any additional comments?

    Stronger main character.

    "phoning it in"

I've liked Finder books in the past, but only finished this one to see if he could rescue it. It's a flimsy pretext with obvious reversals filtered through stock conflicts with the daughter and girlfriend. For the most part the scenes are barely sketched in, more like notes than a novel. In the second half Finder seems to be paying more attention to setting, but spends most of his time on a skiing scenario that reveals he evidently doesn't ski.

This sounds like an early attempt at a potboiler or something written in haste to fulfill a contract. A better narrator wouldn't have been able to salvage much more from the bad writing, but this narrator didn't do it any favors.

Plastic characters in a fantastical story. With about 20 minutes left I decided I didn't care what happened. Sorry I wasted so much time.

    "Average"
Would you try another book from Joseph Finder and/or Steven Kearney?

Maybe, but neither would be at the top of my list.

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

I found the story to be predictable, especially for one billed as a thriller. Characters were all stereotypes, and the prose was a little flat. Not awful, but nothing special.

What do you think the narrator could have done better?

The narrator was average, he wasn't given great material to work with.

Like mainly mystery and suspense with a bit of chick lit and non-fiction thrown in. Severe addiction going on 10 years to Audiobooks.

    "His best yet!!!"
What did you love best about Suspicion?

    The twists and turns

    Any additional comments?

I LOVED this book! The story was nothing short of addicting. I found myself wanting to get in the car and go to work in the morning (usually I only want to go home from work LOL)! I loved the plot and it was so suspenseful and kept me guessing. Just when I thought I had it figured out - BOOM another twist. Paranoia was always my favorite book by him until now. This blew it away. If you are a Finder fan - hit buy. You will not be disappointed with this one!.

"good cross between Paranoia and Gold Coast"

A prep school father borrows money for tuition for his child, and gets drawn into a world of crime and blackmail. The author Joseph Finder knows the Boston prep school world well, and captures it, which is one of the big pluses of the book. I cared about Danny, the protagonist, and his family. This thriller was filled with characters that were interesting and believable enough to keep my interest. Finder's "Paranoia" and DeMille's "Gold Coast" are two of my favorite thrillers. The 'regular guy getting drawn in to crime" is from Paranoia, and the 'regular guy befriending a charismatic criminal kingpin" is from Gold Coast. Both are played effectively in this impelling mystery/thriller. Had I not read either of those other two books, I right have rated this a 5 star novel, but I too often had that "been there" feeling while reading. It's been a few years since the author has written a novel. The wait was worth it, as I had gotten tired of the old formula. Suspicion was good enough for me to check out his next novel.
