Publisher's summary

Audie Award Finalist, Thriller/Suspense, 2014

For 25 years, Robert Crais has written extraordinary novels of crime and suspense. He is "a master of crime fiction" (Associated Press); "his novels get better with every new book" (Portland Oregonian); "Crais is hands-down the world’s greatest crime writer" (The Huffington Post).

But in Suspect, he may have written his most remarkable novel of all.

LAPD cop Scott James is not doing so well, not since a shocking nighttime assault by unidentified men killed his partner, Stephanie, nearly killed him, and left him enraged, ashamed, and ready to explode. He is unfit for duty - until he meets his new partner.

Maggie is not doing so well, either. The German shepherd survived three tours in Iraq and Afghanistan sniffing explosives before she lost her handler to an IED and sniper attack, and her PTSD is as bad as Scott’s.

They are each other’s last chance. He was a young cop on the rise; she was bred to guard and protect. Now they are shunned and shunted to the side. They are suspect. And together they will set out to investigate the one case that no one wants them to touch: the identity of the men who murdered Stephanie.

Nine months and sixteen days later, they remained free. They were still out there.

What they begin to find is nothing like what Scott has been told, and where it will lead them will take them both through the darkest moments of their own personal hells. Whether they will make it out again, no one can say.

Thrilling, emotional, intense, with some of the best characters and well-crafted writing in all of crime fiction, Suspect is further proof that "Crais just keeps getting better" (Publishers Weekly).

Man and Dog Damaged and Healing Together

Maggie is brilliant and her owner isn't bad either. I love both characters, and the narration was solid. This kept my interest and I'd read more, but I have the feeling its a one off. Don't miss this if you like to see how a puzzle solver works and how a friendship between man and dog develops.

Like most of Crais's books - flawless

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

It's another great story by Crais - no Elvis or Pike, but the same depth of character and story that we've learned to expect. If you love a good story, and dogs, it's a sure thing.

Feel Good story. Must listen

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I had urged friends and co-workers to get this book. I consider my self strong and not easily impress by sad stories but this one made me cry. From the beginning of the story when the main character partner was kill and ask him not to leave him I cry and when the dog's partner was kill I kept crying. My emotions went from crying to laughter to crying to feeling good about the ending. If you do not like to feel strong emotions stay away from this story.

Who was your favorite character and why?

The Dog. The author did a great job of showing that animals feel and care for others.

Which scene was your favorite?

I did not had a favor scene because from beginning to end I could not put this book down. I listen to it from beginning to end during the weekend without going to sleep.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Throughout the story I was moved.

Any additional comments?

If you want to feel good about why we need love in our lives, you need to listen to the book. I urged anyone who loves dogs to read this book.

My first with this author

I liked the book, more for the parts involving the dog than the cop. Decent narration, too.

Brilliant writing

Tense and gripping from beginning to end. I could hardly stop listening. And fascinating insight into how people and dogs communicate and how dogs relate to us. Very good narration.

Ever think about how K9s think? This is IT!

Any additional comments?

Robert Crais provides a wonderful novel about Scott and Maggie, the K9 from Iraq & Afghanistan tours who lost her handler. Told from both of their viewpoints, you have a unique chance to watch how the close bonds between cops and their canines develop. While Scott is trying to deal with his part in the death of his partner, Maggie is having to deal with her PTSD as well. The story provides the background that brings them together and keeps on building as Scott works to unravel what happened that night. The answers are slowly revealed as Crais develops the unexpected climax. I loved this book especially since I am an avid dog lover. Maggie is terrific and Scott becomes more understandable as his character is revealed. It's one of those books you want to go back, re-read and look for any subtle clues you missed. If you like mysteries and dogs, and ever wondered about K9s and their work, this is a great novel to savor. The narrator was spot on with his various voices for the characters in Suspect and added to the novel. Please enjoy!!
