Publisher's summary

Audie Award Finalist, Thriller/Suspense, 2014

For 25 years, Robert Crais has written extraordinary novels of crime and suspense. He is "a master of crime fiction" (Associated Press); "his novels get better with every new book" (Portland Oregonian); "Crais is hands-down the world’s greatest crime writer" (The Huffington Post).

But in Suspect, he may have written his most remarkable novel of all.

LAPD cop Scott James is not doing so well, not since a shocking nighttime assault by unidentified men killed his partner, Stephanie, nearly killed him, and left him enraged, ashamed, and ready to explode. He is unfit for duty - until he meets his new partner.

Maggie is not doing so well, either. The German shepherd survived three tours in Iraq and Afghanistan sniffing explosives before she lost her handler to an IED and sniper attack, and her PTSD is as bad as Scott’s.

They are each other’s last chance. He was a young cop on the rise; she was bred to guard and protect. Now they are shunned and shunted to the side. They are suspect. And together they will set out to investigate the one case that no one wants them to touch: the identity of the men who murdered Stephanie.

Nine months and sixteen days later, they remained free. They were still out there.

What they begin to find is nothing like what Scott has been told, and where it will lead them will take them both through the darkest moments of their own personal hells. Whether they will make it out again, no one can say.

Thrilling, emotional, intense, with some of the best characters and well-crafted writing in all of crime fiction, Suspect is further proof that "Crais just keeps getting better" (Publishers Weekly).

Hated to put it down to sleep

I really enjoyed this Crais book. Some of his narrators for the Elvis books put me off but this I enjoyed. Story was good, narration was good, I'll check for more.

Great story and a must for dog lovers

Stumbled across this book and based on the reviews I took a chance. Really enjoyed the book even though I wished it was longer. The narration was well done and given that I'm a dog lover I could really relate to the story line.

The Challenge is On!

This is one of the best audiobooks of the past few years. Although there are other "mystery" books with more intricate plots, scarier themes, and, yes, more intellectual subjects, there are very few books that are as entertaining and that will touch your heart like this one. Don't read any more reviews, don't ponder over whether it's worth a credit: just get it! I dare you -- I double-dog dare you -- to be able to read it without, when it's over, saying out loud: Wow; what a great story!

Wonderful! Also search for my "Prayer Review"

Would you listen to Suspect again? Why?

No but only because I just don't. Anyone who does this will want to.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Scott, because he did what he thought was right, paid the price for his mistakes etc. I hope to see another one of these along with more from Joe Pike and Elvis. Maybe even a "SuperFriends" version with all three and even Det. Cowley (sp?)

Which character – as performed by MacLeod Andrews – was your favorite?

All of them. One of my best narrator compliments after well over 500 titles is when I mostly don't think about who is talking. When I can't find new titles by favorite authors I may add MacLeod Andrews to the list of people I check out like King George (Guidall).

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I did laugh a couple times, and yes, there were a couple damp eye moments.

Any additional comments?

If you are new to Crais you are in for a real treat.

Just WONDERFUL!

Love this story, the narration is perfection, and I could not stop listening. My first Robert Crais, but will not be my last! Am hoping for more stories of Maggie and Scott.

Terrific

Definitely a book for dog lovers. The narrative point-of-view switches between characters, including Maggie, the ex-Marine dog. The interesting mystery plot carries the story forward, but this book is really a journey of healing and reconnecting, for both Maggie and her new handler, Scott.

I wish there were 10 Stars to give!!

What did you love best about Suspect?

The interaction between Scott and Maggie grew so completely. You could just see Maggie and her desire to love and protect. Scott tries and succeeds in letting Maggie know he loves her. What a great story. It keeps you guessing as to who the "bad guys" are.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Suspect?

In the beginning with Pete and Maggie. I learned so much about MWD's. What Heroes they are!

Have you listened to any of MacLeod Andrews’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

No this was my first experience with Mr. Andrews's writing, but it won't be the last!

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes! I couldn't stop once I got started.

Could be the thriller of 2013

Where does Suspect rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

I hate to say where a title rank for two reasons:Different categories means different ways I as a reader may judge the book. When, I listen to a classic I judge each sentence in my head to see if I think it's both well written and read. Secondly, my mood might judge a book differently, if I am in a thriller-mood: Of course thrillers will get a higher rating.I am very picky about thrillers: They either need a heavy plot or characters I never forget. A good thriller makes me forget time while rasing my pulse. It takes me from joy to pain so intense I cry out in fear and sorrow. This book did that and more. Great crazy-work, a page turner sharper than a trigget with a heartbeat. It is laid Bruce by brick into perfection. The lenght perfect for this specific plot.

What other book might you compare Suspect to and why?

Even though the plots are different both "The bat" and "Political suecide" almost brought me the same joy last year. This was better.

What does MacLeod Andrews bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

He brings the Soul of Maggie the dog into your heart.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The Truth in Maggie's love throughout the book.

Any additional comments?

This book remains in your heart. Credit proof like few other relativly short modern thrillers of our busy time.

New Direction--Another Winner!

I was a bit nervous--usually I wait for reviews before buying a new book. But, I'm really glad that I took the plunge. Crais writes with just enough humor to offset the violence and darkness in his stories.

I hope that this is the start of a new series--the main characters could probably develop in some interesting ways.

No spoiler alert--but plot does come to a somewhat predictable end. Still it held my interest.

If you like the David Rosenfelt series of ' detective with dog' books about Andy Carpenter and his Golden Retriever, then you will probably enjoy this one.

Well narrated --good variation in the character voices and excellent pacing.

The Pack, Safe and Happy

Excellent narration. I liked the story, and want a sequel. I smiled, chuckled a little, and teared up a time or two. This is my first book by this author, but I've seen plenty of his crime-drama television series. This felt similar, with that general expectation that everything will turn out okay for the good guys in the end. Mind you, not without loss, and I had my doubts at one point, when things went south for the Pack.

And that's the part of the book I liked best. The dog Maggie, rejoicing to form a new pack. How she loved her new alpha, Scott James. Her joy at being able to protect and serve him. He may be all about saving the world and avenging his dead partner Stephanie, but Maggie Girl is all about him. Whatever makes him happy. Whatever keeps him safe. Whatever keeps the pack together.

Such a simplistic mindset must be easy on the psyche. But even Maggie suffered from PTSD, so it's not always a walk in the park.

The POV is 3rd person. It hops around from Scott to varied other characters, including the dog. The setting is Los Angeles. The language includes some swearing and religious profanity, which I don't like -- especially in audiobook -- but there wasn't much of it.

I liked the stuff about how a dog thinks and how a German Shepherd's nose works. Amazing olfactory ability, and the author wove it into the story without creating an info-dump feeling. I liked the director of the K-9 division, Dominic Leland.

I figured out who done it half-way in, so it was predictable, but that's fine with me. And I didn't know how or why or who else was in on it, so there's some suspense.

I wanted to see how other important characters responded to the denouement. Other detectives, retired and on active duty. But that ain't how he wrote it. Bummer.

There's the potential for a budding romance between Scott and a particular woman, but Maggie is his best girl.

Top drawer narrator. Would listen to him again.
