Publisher's summary

Audie Award Finalist, Thriller/Suspense, 2014

For 25 years, Robert Crais has written extraordinary novels of crime and suspense. He is "a master of crime fiction" (Associated Press); "his novels get better with every new book" (Portland Oregonian); "Crais is hands-down the world’s greatest crime writer" (The Huffington Post).

But in Suspect, he may have written his most remarkable novel of all.

LAPD cop Scott James is not doing so well, not since a shocking nighttime assault by unidentified men killed his partner, Stephanie, nearly killed him, and left him enraged, ashamed, and ready to explode. He is unfit for duty - until he meets his new partner.

Maggie is not doing so well, either. The German shepherd survived three tours in Iraq and Afghanistan sniffing explosives before she lost her handler to an IED and sniper attack, and her PTSD is as bad as Scott’s.

They are each other’s last chance. He was a young cop on the rise; she was bred to guard and protect. Now they are shunned and shunted to the side. They are suspect. And together they will set out to investigate the one case that no one wants them to touch: the identity of the men who murdered Stephanie.

Nine months and sixteen days later, they remained free. They were still out there.

What they begin to find is nothing like what Scott has been told, and where it will lead them will take them both through the darkest moments of their own personal hells. Whether they will make it out again, no one can say.

Thrilling, emotional, intense, with some of the best characters and well-crafted writing in all of crime fiction, Suspect is further proof that "Crais just keeps getting better" (Publishers Weekly).

Very Suspenseful

I would definitely listen to this book again. Robert Crais did an extraordinary job with the plot. I could not put the audio down and found myself listening to it in the car and every free moment I could spare. If you are looking for a good mystery book you will not be disappointed.

Another Crais Hit

Good story, tho after the initial action, it slows down for too long. Could have done with fewer dog-bonding scenes - we get it already - and more action. Ending was great, tho seemed tacked on and not long enough. Compared to the Pike/Cole books, this wasn't as good, but maybe we'll see more of Scott and Maggie and have a chance to get to know them better. I'd definately listen to more. Narrator was pretty good; I'll look for other reads by him.

A One-Sitting Book You Can't Put Down

Any additional comments?

I originally thought I'd listen to this book over the course of a few days. Boy, was I wrong. This is a compelling story with great characters. The pacing of the book is extraordinary and you'll be wishing the it would slow down a bit so you could take a break. My only criticism is I pretty much knew the where the story was going to end up by the middle of the book, but it was still fun getting there. However, I blame that on reading too many Michael Connelly books, so I'm pretty well trained to see where the twists are leading.

I have a very good friend who was a K-9 officer for a good portion of his career, and I was truly impressed with how well the author was able to represent the unique connection these folks have with their canine partners. More impressive was the authors ability to represent the dog's perspective of this relationship as well.

You won't regret this book in any way.

100% Fabulous

I have listened to hundreds of audiobooks. This is by far the best I have ever experienced. One of the professional reviewers said that not one second is wasted by the writer and I agree. I was captivated from beginning to end. The narration…don’t even let me get started on how amazing Macleod Andrews is. I can’t imagine anyone else narrating this book. Sheer perfection.

Entertaining...

I thought this was a very enjoyable book. I particularly loved the character of the dog, but beyond that, the story was also interesting and fairly well put together.

Amazing Performance, Involving Story

I have read a few books by Robert Crais before and loved his characters and tight plots. This is my first audiobook of his. MacLeod Andrews’ narration amazed me. I have had three of my books turned into audiobooks, and I’ve been quite pleased with them, but I know how difficult it is for a single narrator to create voices of other characters. Andrews must have multiple personalities. The men, the women, even a dog, have great voices. I just now looked at what else he has narrated, and I see he’s part of the new Phil Klay novel. I just downloaded it.

As a recent first-time dog owner, I also learned a lot about dogs in this book. LAPD police officer Scott James joins a K-9 unit after surviving an ambush on city streets. His partner was killed in the ambush, and he’s done his best to hide his PTSD to remain on the force. After nine months in recovery, he starts following leads in the still-open case with his attack dog Maggie at his side. It’s gripping.

Healing Hands and Paws

I really enjoyed this story! It was so easy to empathize with Scott and Maggie and I loved having Maggie's point of view!

Awesome book

This is a great book. Kept me interested from the very beginning. I’ve seen police dogs in action and they are as amazing as Maggie sounds. Well written, suspenseful and enjoyable. Well worth the credit.
