Publisher's summary

Audie Award Finalist, Thriller/Suspense, 2014

For 25 years, Robert Crais has written extraordinary novels of crime and suspense. He is "a master of crime fiction" (Associated Press); "his novels get better with every new book" (Portland Oregonian); "Crais is hands-down the world’s greatest crime writer" (The Huffington Post).

But in Suspect, he may have written his most remarkable novel of all.

LAPD cop Scott James is not doing so well, not since a shocking nighttime assault by unidentified men killed his partner, Stephanie, nearly killed him, and left him enraged, ashamed, and ready to explode. He is unfit for duty - until he meets his new partner.

Maggie is not doing so well, either. The German shepherd survived three tours in Iraq and Afghanistan sniffing explosives before she lost her handler to an IED and sniper attack, and her PTSD is as bad as Scott’s.

They are each other’s last chance. He was a young cop on the rise; she was bred to guard and protect. Now they are shunned and shunted to the side. They are suspect. And together they will set out to investigate the one case that no one wants them to touch: the identity of the men who murdered Stephanie.

Nine months and sixteen days later, they remained free. They were still out there.

What they begin to find is nothing like what Scott has been told, and where it will lead them will take them both through the darkest moments of their own personal hells. Whether they will make it out again, no one can say.

Thrilling, emotional, intense, with some of the best characters and well-crafted writing in all of crime fiction, Suspect is further proof that "Crais just keeps getting better" (Publishers Weekly).

First Robert Crais book

Where does Suspect rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

I really enjoyed Suspect. It was my first time reading a Crais novel. I will definitively try another. It kept my interest all the way through. I enjoyed the narrator as well.

The Dog Parts Are the Best

Maggie is a great character. I was worried that this would be one of those animal stories that are hard to hear, but the relationship between Maggie and Scott was wonderful. I love the way they healed each other. Read this one without fear.

If you love dogs, read this book!!!

If you love dogs, read this book.
If you love German Shepard's, read this book.
If you love broken hero's (both man and dog) that make a grand comeback, read this book.
If you love detective books, read this book.

This is one of the better books I've read lately. It has a broken dog and a broken cop that make and unlikely pair. While trying to solve a murder both dog and man must face their demons. You will find that you cheer with every success and cry at every defeat.

The plot is solid and the characters are believably. You come to love the main characters and feel every pain and triumph right along with them. MacLeod Andrews does a great job of narration. He is equally believable as our hero, the fellow women police, the gruff trainer and of course Maggie the dog. Seeing part of the story from Maggie s perspective allows us to witness what is going on, from every angle and every characters perspective.

A well done story. You can not go wrong with this book!!

Especially for dog lovers

I see there are a few thousand good reviews for this book, so mine is probably redundant, but I just wanted to add my voice to so many others. This is a great book, especially for dog lovers. I had a number of German Shepherds when I was growing up, and the descriptions of Maggie were, for me, extremely vivid and true to life. I had tears in my eyes more than once while listening to this audio-book...

I loved Maggie's perspective

This is the first book by Robert Crais that I have read. I really enjoyed the way the story was told. Even though I have owned a few dogs in my time, I don't think I really knew much about them. I learned a lot about them in this book. I would love to hear more about Scott and Maggie in future books!

The perfect pack, dog and master

The very best story I have read in years. Not usually my subject but the review hooked me. Literally could not turn it off. The devotion of dog and handler is told so sympathetically.
Emotional and compelling.
