Publisher's summary

Audie Award Finalist, Thriller/Suspense, 2014

For 25 years, Robert Crais has written extraordinary novels of crime and suspense. He is "a master of crime fiction" (Associated Press); "his novels get better with every new book" (Portland Oregonian); "Crais is hands-down the world’s greatest crime writer" (The Huffington Post).

But in Suspect, he may have written his most remarkable novel of all.

LAPD cop Scott James is not doing so well, not since a shocking nighttime assault by unidentified men killed his partner, Stephanie, nearly killed him, and left him enraged, ashamed, and ready to explode. He is unfit for duty - until he meets his new partner.

Maggie is not doing so well, either. The German shepherd survived three tours in Iraq and Afghanistan sniffing explosives before she lost her handler to an IED and sniper attack, and her PTSD is as bad as Scott’s.

They are each other’s last chance. He was a young cop on the rise; she was bred to guard and protect. Now they are shunned and shunted to the side. They are suspect. And together they will set out to investigate the one case that no one wants them to touch: the identity of the men who murdered Stephanie.

Nine months and sixteen days later, they remained free. They were still out there.

What they begin to find is nothing like what Scott has been told, and where it will lead them will take them both through the darkest moments of their own personal hells. Whether they will make it out again, no one can say.

Thrilling, emotional, intense, with some of the best characters and well-crafted writing in all of crime fiction, Suspect is further proof that "Crais just keeps getting better" (Publishers Weekly).

Truly Loved this book

What made the experience of listening to Suspect the most enjoyable?

A well crafted yarn with well developed characters, what more can you ask for?

Who was your favorite character and why?

The dog was so well written. If you own dogs and more specifically shepherds it is clear that Crais either also does or really did his homework. He really brought both the main characters alive for me and I didn't want the book to end. I hope he writes a new adventure for this team.

Any additional comments?

Yes buy this if you like animals and detective yarns.

If you could sum up Suspect in three words, what would they be?

Woof Woof - GREAT

I loved how the story weaved the dog's perspective along with the humans.

Which scene was your favorite?

Any time the dog is talking gives a great perspective and was fascinating

Pleasant Surprise

If you could sum up Suspect in three words, what would they be?

Wasn't sure if I would like a book with a dog as a main character but this was quite well written and he didn't shy away from the challenge of doing "doggie character development." Well written, plotted, etc.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Suspect?

I think some of the dog introspection was interesting. Mostly that he pulled it off without being overly simplistic and cutesy. Actually thought of the dog as one of the characters.

Which character – as performed by MacLeod Andrews – was your favorite?

Not sure the performance was particularly memorable. I liked the female detective/semi--love-interest character.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

I'm not clever at 6 in the morning. No idea.

WOW!

Where does Suspect rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

I have read or listened to almost all Robert Crais books, and think this is one of his best!

What was one of the most memorable moments of Suspect?

Loved all the great bonding, dog moments!

Any additional comments?

The narrator was great, the story was great. Even though I guessed who the bad guys were halfway through the book, it certainly did not change the way I felt about this book! Loved it!

I love Maggie

I can't believe how much I loved this book. I love the two injured souls meeting and healing. Maggie doing her own narrative? Well--it usually is not my thing to have animals narrate anything--but this was great. Very nice book. Good narrator. Very enjoyable.

Excellent!!

What did you love best about Suspect?

This stroy grabbed my interest from the very beginning. The wonderful insight and experience of feeling the story from different viewpoints delivered a multidimensional wholism.

Who was your favorite character and why?

There was no one character that was my favorite. That speaks well of a book which develops characters so completly that the interplay and story delivers a concert of favorite events that come together and follow through to the finale.

What about MacLeod Andrews’s performance did you like?

EVERYTHING!!!

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

The perfect mix of emotional response -empathy, joy, justice, love, compassion and appreciation for healthy interactions where the transparency of organic failures balance with celebration, forgiveness and accomplishment.

Dog lover or not, this is a beautifully written suspense story with amazing interaction between a police officer and his K,-9. Suspenseful all the way up to the end.

Engaging and hard to put down!

I had never read this author before and was happily delighted by not only the whodunnit plot but also by the relationship between the main character and the dog. As a dog lover, mystery lover, and someone who needs an intelligent storyline, I thoroughly enjoyed this book!
