Publisher's Summary

There's a storm front coming!

Four years after he was presumed dead, Derrick Storm - the man who made Richard Castle a perennial bestseller - is back in this rip-roaring, full-length thriller.

From Tokyo, to London, to Johannesburg, high-level bankers are being gruesomely tortured and murdered. The killer, caught in a fleeting glimpse on a surveillance camera, has been described as a psychopath with an eye patch. And that means Gregor Volkov, Derrick Storm's old nemesis, has returned. Desperate to figure out who Volkov is working for and why, the CIA calls on the one man who can match Volkov's strength and cunning - Derrick Storm.

With the help of a beautiful and mysterious foreign agent - with whom Storm is becoming romantically and professionally entangled - he discovers that Volkov's treachery has embroiled a wealthy hedge-fund manager and a U.S. senator. In a heated race against time, Storm chases Volkov's shadow from Paris, to the lair of a computer genius in Iowa, to the streets of Manhattan, then through a bullet-riddled car chase on the New Jersey Turnpike. In the process, Storm uncovers a plot that could destroy the global economy - unleashing untold chaos - which only he can stop.

"Love the show..The book--Not so much."

Richard Castle could learn much from Carl Hiaasen. The book has some funny names and the term "ruggedly handsome" was used liberally, but the plot was stupid and definitely not very clever.
On the show, Castle is friends with James Patterson. They must have attended the same marketing class. In that, they excel. In writing, they are a disappointment to their fans. Two words--"not enough". Not enough was funny and not enough fun to justify the purchase price.

    "Fluff"
What disappointed you about Storm Front?

I expected a little bit of fluff, but I expected it to be more consciously tongue in cheek: funnier! The book took itself much too seriously. The plot was too cheesy (Romanian orphans? Really?)

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

More balance between humour and plot. The plot was good enough for a TV show - but not deep enough for a book.

Would you be willing to try another one of Robert Petkoff’s performances?

The performance was one of the worst things about it. If it was read by a subtler reader, who was able to bring the characters more alive than they were written, it would have helped. I enjoy the TV show, and I could hear in the writing how it was trying to capture some of that mood - but the narrator wasn't up to the task - he played everything on the same level.

    "Molotov Cocktails"
    Any additional comments?

Author's use of Molotov cocktails was unworkable. He was using water bottles, which are made of plastic - these won't create firebombs when thrown, because they won't break on contact. This was something I felt he should have known. Also, I found the idea of Monex passwords silly - what system would have passwords that couldn't be cancelled? Aside from that, I'm a fan of the show - otherwise, three stars.

    "Horrible"
This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

Clearly this book wasn't written for anyone over the age of 12. Characters were named Ling She-bang (groan) and Graham Cracker (ugh). I realize it was written by a fictional character who acts like a 12 year old, but it was just too far out in left field to even be remotely plausible.

What character would you cut from Storm Front?

Cameos by Nikki Heat and Jamison Rook were completely pointless and unnecessary except to once again say how "ruggedly handsome" Rook and Storm both are. I know it's Castle's opinion of himself on tv, but it really didn't need to be included here. It was just one more ridiculous spot in the book.

    Any additional comments?

I almost gave up at the very beginning because of the background music for the first 5-10 minutes of the book. I should have taken that as a sign of how awful the book was going to be. The dialogue is groan inducing. The situations are over the top even for a spy novel. I read the first two Nikki Heat books and kind of liked them. But this was just painful to listen to.

I enjoyed listening to this book. The plot was very good as well as the character development. I especially liked the gift at the end.

"Awful! A comic book that's 1 cliche after another"
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

This book is SOOOOOOOOOOOO bad, I can't believe it was published. It reminds me of the old Bat Man & Robin television shows, a cartoon made into "reality" that's so full of clichés any of us could have written it with a copy of "1000 Most Popular Cliches" plus extreme violence. And then there's Storm's love interest "She Bang".

I finished the book but only because I couldn't believe how awful it was with writing like:

"Impossible!" "But impossible is what Storm does."

And the narrator is just as bad as the story, at least in this book.

Don't waste your money OR your time. All of that said I actually really like the current television show "Castle".... go figure.

"NOT up to the standards of Richard Castle!"
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

The writing was predictable, overly descriptive when it didn't need to be, and worked too hard to build drama, when less words would have done a better job. The Character Names were rediculous, and NOT up to the standards that I have come to expect from Richard Castle in the other 5 books I have listened to.

Has Storm Front turned you off from other books in this genre?

I will try ONE more Derrick Storm novel, and if it similar to this schlock, I will swear off Derrick Storm for good. (If I listen to a new Nicki Heat novel, and it has taken this kind of a turn, I may just be done with Richard Castle all together.)

What aspect of Robert Petkoff’s performance would you have changed?

I would have changed it to Johnny Heller, whi, in my opinion IS the voice of Richard Castle. I LOVED his performances on ALL the Heat novels, and the Storm short stories. I was VERY surprised that it was a different performer.

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Storm Front?

A LOT of the needlessly long technical descriptions, the drawn out fight scenes, the stupid mistake of walking across the street to get Volkoff with NO plan, in spite of his love interest begging him to have a plan. A seasoned professional investigator would NOT do that. Those are the kind of ridiculous things that make me not care for this book at all.

    "Could Be Better"
Is there anything you would change about this book?

I would prefer to have the plot and the characters more fully thought out. Also, the tempo of the book is too erratic--the first half just drags by, and then the second half, while somewhat better, ties up major plot twists with only a few sentences (aka the "Teddy" situation. A LOT more could have been done with that scenario).

What could Richard Castle have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

"Richard Castle" needs to find another ghost writer.

What about Robert Petkoff’s performance did you like?

I thought that Mr. Petkoff did a good job narrating this book.

    Any additional comments?

While I am a big fan of the Castle TV series, and I love the Nikki Heat books, I thought that this book was well below the usual writing standard. I really hope that ABC finds another writer who can do the Derrick Storm series justice.

"Way too far over the top"

I like some believability in my stories. There was none here. While the performance was OK, it was overshadowed by a musical background for the first few minutes. What genius thought up the idea of music in a audiobook read? All in all an unsatisfactory purchase. And I'm a Castle fan.

    "Ridiculous Names"
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

More believable names, somehow "Ling She Bang", "Graham Cracker" and others don't ring plausible. Getting on to a 747 while it was taking off doesn't really cut it either.

What was most disappointing about Richard Castle’s story?

    See above

What didn’t you like about Robert Petkoff’s performance?

    It was OK

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

    Not really.
