Publisher's Summary

On a hot July morning on Sweden's idyllic vacation island of Sandhamn, a man takes his dog for a walk and makes a gruesome discovery: a body, tangled in fishing net, has washed ashore.

Police detective Thomas Andreasson is the first to arrive on the scene. Before long, he has identified the deceased as Krister Berggren, a bachelor from the mainland who has been missing for months. All signs point to an accident - until another brutalized corpse is found at the local bed-and-breakfast. But this time it is Berggren's cousin, whom Thomas interviewed in Stockholm just days before.

As the island's residents reel from the news, Thomas turns to his childhood friend, local lawyer Nora Linde. Together, they attempt to unravel the riddles left behind by these two mysterious outsiders - while trying to make sense of the difficult twists their own lives have taken since the shared summer days of their youth.

I love to read books set in interesting places or historical settings. I especially love mysteries and thrillers.

    "Good at Times, but Unsatisfying"

I am a glass half full person so I can easily point out several things I liked about the audio book. The setting is beautiful and remote, the characters are few, but fleshed-out, the writing is easy and flowing. The mystery was traditionally written, more British than Scandinavian. Yet, it was also predictably written. The story starts strong but just seems to run out of steam from the middle point to the end.

The police don't solve it. The solution just happens. The narrator has a wonderful pacing and voices for women and children. The voices for men are hard to sit through.

I have always admired the European view of vacations - taking August off at all costs. Well, I finally found the flaw. What happens to a murder case if it happens the last weeks of July and everyone goes on vacation? Lesson learned -- don't get murdered in late Summer in Europe.

Rated PG 15. Several "F" bombs. Fairly clean other than that. I was surprised with the ending.

    "Wrong narrator"

The shrill, fast voice of he narrator ruined this book for me and because of the American accent made e book sound like a hard-boiled US detective novel. The more laid back Swedish atmosphere was lost.

    "Travel Log via a Mystery"
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

If you ever wanted to know about Stockholm in a clever way, then this book does it. If you have been to the city, then this book brings it all back.

Would you be willing to try another book from Viveca Sten and Marlaine Delargy - translation ? Why or why not?

Well, if Ms Dawe reads it, then yes as her male voice in this book is terrific. However, I like a deeper mystery than is produced by this author. This book had too much travel log for me, but it did have a clever mystery. There is suspense, but too much travel log description added a filler that took away from the mystery. I can see how author turns this read into a series, and I have #2 in my wish list if I run out of Ms Dawes books to buy.

What about Angela Dawe’s performance did you like?

I am a big fan of Ms Dawe and purchased this author because she read it. Her male voice is the best as are her children's voices. How she ever pronounced all these Swedish names was so impressive. I have been to Stockholm and she was spot on. If you like a romance, see Tiffany Snow series, yum, that Ms Dawe reads. One of my fave.

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

This would make a good movie, e..g. KECT Shetland. The surroundings described in this book would translate well into TV.

    "Kept my attention, but..."

I love Swedish mysteries, and have at least cruised through Stockholm's archipelago. I won't do a spoiler but merely note that the author pulled out an all too common solution. Narration was excellent.

I enjoyed this book and will read more stories by this author when they are translated. I was disappointed this was the only English translation at this time.

Very poor story line. Book would be ok for a pre teen, to amateurish. Keep looking

    "Unresolved ending"

Assuming there are things not finished there is a sequel? I dislike books like that. I should buy the next book based on the quality of the first, not to finish the first story. Reader sounded like she was gagging whenever she read a male voice. Distracting.

    "I try. I really try."

I try to give Ms.Dawe a chance. I still cannot stand to listen to her. This book I made it to chapter 5. however, having every sentence sound like it is the end if the world is just annoying . one can't even get into the story because the constant "OH MY GODDESS!!! THE WORLD IS ENDING RIGHT NOW! " is just too irritating. if I could give negative stars for performance I would.

Good but some annoyances such as repetition of the word archipelago and what sounded like cut and pasted "Thomas said" so many times.

    "A good listen."

I enjoyed listening to this book. The setting on the island of Sandhamn is beautifully described and sounds tranquil, but it's not long before a body is washed up on the shore and in step the police detectives from Stockholm.
I liked getting to know the characters and their back stories. Hopefully more to follow.
The story is a little predictable but flows well and keeps you interested - it's definitely worth a listen. It would be good to hear more from this author to see how the characters and their relationships develop.
