Publisher's summary

When the body of a murdered man literally falls at Elizabeth Stuart's feet, she's able to wash away the blood - but not the terror. Unwelcome newcomers to Still Creek, Minnesota, she and her troubled teenage son are treated with suspicion by the locals, including the sheriff. Yet nothing will stop her from digging beneath the town's placid surface for the truth - except the killer.

Running from a messy divorce, Elizabeth believed buying a small-town newspaper offered a fresh start for herself and her son. But idyllic Still Creek, nestled in the heart of lush Amish farmlands, hides secrets dangerous enough to push someone to commit murder.

Now Elizabeth must risk everything to save herself and her son and to unmask the killer - before the current of evil flowing through Still Creek drags her under.

Good grief.

This must be Tami Hoag in a prior life, writing a different genre. Pure romance -- assuming that's what the intent is.

I get more pleasure listening to the two feral cats out in the back yard, snarling, howling and hissing at each other prior to mating..... at least the cats are honest about it.

Harlequin Romance here we come...

Would you try another book from Tami Hoag and/or Joyce Bean?

I've listened to several Tami Hoag books and have enjoyed them all, until Still Waters. In the previous Tami Hoag novels the suspense and mystery kept me reading (or listening) while the romance was just a small part of the overall book. In Still Waters the whole book is a romance novel and an unbelievable one at that. Puhleeze..."Oh I hate this man and he treats me with disrespect, but I also just can't resist his physical appeal so let me jump his bones.". Ugh. I found myself rolling my eyes throughout the book, just trying to get through. Not only that but I couldn't stand either of the main characters ( who can't resist each other though they can't stand each other). The narrorator's version of Elizabeth comes off not as a sophisticated southern bell but more as your typical poor white trash. Nails on a chalkboard. I had to fast forward through so much of this book because I was repulsed by the idiocy. Too much romance (and unbelievable at that) and not enough plot.

Huge Disappointment

I've listened to several of Tami Hoag's most recent books and they were great thrillers with a tiny bit of romance interspersed throughout. This book on the other hand, was a horrendously cheesy romance with a flimsy "thriller" plot. I almost didn't make it through. I should have paid better attention to reviews that said that it was a romance, but the overwhelming ratings were positive, so I thought I'd give it a shot. If you're expecting a thriller, don't waste your credit.

Also, the narrator's performance of Elizabeth was twangy and grating - for a heroine that was supposed to be an attractive woman with a voice of "sex and smoke" - she was anything but that...

Great read, but

The premise of the story is very interesting. Along the same line as any other mystery. It was probably 15 chapters too long. Very repetitive regarding the son and the sheriff. She goes on and on about her son maturing, growing up etc. It became a bit much. Regarding the Sheriff, in bed out of bed, touch me here, don't touch me. Kiss me, don't kiss me. Hold me don't hold me. I love you, no I don't. You get my drift.
Like I said I did enjoy the basic story, just not the extra 15 or so, chapters.

Still Waters

If you have ever read Tami Hoag then you know her style of writing does have lots of romance and some mystery. I read this many years ago and enjoyed the story, but I had a little harder time this time around due to Dane being a jerk to Elizabeth during most of the story, plus there was an annoying poor me mentality from all the characters. You can tell this book was made in the early 90’s, due to the lack of technology in the story and all the smoking done by most of the characters. I enjoy Tami Hoag’s later books more than her earlier ones. Another good one is Cry Wolf, Dark Paradise and 1. Dark Horse, 2. Alibi Man.

wonderful

I am at a loss why there were some seriously negative reviews. I truly enjoyed this book. I just recently found this author. I am working backwards from the one I started with. I liked the humor and didn't see large amount of romance.

another romance novel

I'm not a fan of romance novels, and since this one had the same old formula shes beautiful he's beautiful they hate each other they fall in love everything is rosy at the end, I wasn't too excited. The writing was well done the narrator was excellent so if you're a romance novel lover than this would be a very good book for you.

Way too much trash talk

I love Tami Hoag's work and was excited to find one I hadn't read. Wish I hadn't. Cliched, overtly cheesy, way too much sexy (badly) descriptions. I listened only because I wanted to know who dunnit. But that could have been covered in less than 10% of the chapters. This book needs to be reclassified from mystery/crime to trashy romance. :-(. I wouldn't have wasted my credit otherwise.
