Publisher's summary

NYPD Detective Michael Bennett is about to take on the most sinister challenge of his career. The nation has fallen into mourning after the unexpected death of a beloved former first lady, and the most powerful people in the world gather in New York for her funeral. Then the inconceivable occurs. Billionaires, politicians, and superstars of every kind are suddenly trapped within one man's brilliant and cold-blooded scenario.

Bennett, father of 10, is pulled into the fray. As the danger escalates, he is hit with devastating news: after fighting for many years, his wife has succumbed to a terrible disease. As New York descends into chaos, he has lost the great love of his life, faces raising his heartbroken children alone, and must somehow rescue 34 hostages.

Day after day, Bennett confronts the most ruthless man he has ever dealt with, a man who kills without hesitation and counters everything the NYPD and FBI throw at him with impunity. As the entire world watches, and the tensions build to a searing heat, Bennett has to find a way out or face responsibility for the greatest debacle in history.

Step On A Crack

Good Book but didn't hold my interest. Good surprise ending. Would recommend if you like James Patterson but this is my first Patterson book so I can't give a judgement call just yet. I need to read a few more books to get the feel for his writing.

Great. Book

I liked the family connection and how the death of the Mother was handled. Another great character from James Patterson.

Reader does a great job

The reader does a great job with voices and making the story really shine. The story itself is a bit drab for Patterson. Not as twisty and suspenseful as his normal books. The end seems to be a very quick wrap up explaining the whole story.

Great Listen

In typical James Patterson fashion, this would be a page-turner if it were in paper form. Highly recommend if you're a Patterson fan.

Good story but.....

This was definitely a good story but the lead character's behavior begs believability. He has a wife in the hospital, dying of terminal cancer and 10 kids at home who depend on him as they will soon have no mother yet he is the ONLY guy in NYC who can go in after the kidnappers, risking leaving those kids orphans? Really???

And why does one of his kids comment about the nanny's "funny" Irish accent when his mother's character speaks with the exact same accent? Doesn't make sense.

Then there is the issue where the dead hijackers are found with NO finger prints but later they break the case using FINGER PRINTS from the dead hijacker!

Numerous little conflicts like that kept me from giving it 5 stars but overall I liked the book.

Not as good as the Private series.

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

Moved.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes

Any additional comments?

This was an okay book. Nothing spectacular. Just a nice easy read. The Narrators did a very good job.

A solid good read

A good mix of heart tugging tenderness and who dun it intrigue. Dual Narration is nice and adds to the enjoyment of the book. The cast of characters, that have emerged with this series, will give Mr. Patterson plenty of angles and material to weave into the many cases that Detective Michael Bennett will need to solve, whilst he also raises his Bennett brood! The thriller/ who dun it aspect of the case is a good mind exercise with a kick at just the right places. Nice read!
