The undisputed master of the techno-thriller has written his most riveting, and entertaining, book yet.

State of Fear is a superb blend of edge-of-your-seat suspense and thought provoking commentary on how information is manipulated in the modern world. From the streets of Paris, to the glaciers of Antarctica, to the exotic and dangerous Solomon Islands, State of Fear takes the listener on a rollercoaster thrill ride, all the while keeping the brain in high gear.

Critic reviews

" State of Fear is one of Crichton's best because it's as hard to pigeonhole as greenhouse gas but certainly heats up the room." ( Entertainment Weekly)
"Michael Crichton's new, can't-put-it-down novel is a first-of-a-kind thriller - a fast-paced adventure based on the notion that a current widespread fear is baseless." ( Forbes)

Greatly enjoyed this.

A very good story. Something we should really pay attention to. The appendix truly sums up the danger.

Questionable narration

Honestly couldn't get that far, will return. Good story, maybe I'll read it. I could no longer stand the mouth/lip/saliva noises of this narrator. Other than that, the narrator was good.

As suspected

I always read the reviews, if available, before I download a book. This turned out just like the reviews said it would. If you're an Al Gore fan and believe global warming is confirmed science you will rate this as a single star because you can't go any lower. If you are suspicious of the traditional take on global warming you may actually enjoy this book. My five stars is in part just because the author takes the issue head on.

Interesting story; IRRITATING narration!

I've heard books read by George Wilson before, and, unfortunately, forgot how irritating I found his narration! He mispronounces words, swallows, makes sticky "dry mouth" sounds - at times I swear I can even hear his stomach growling! The narration distracted me so much I couldn't fully appreciate the story, although I listened to the whole thing.

It was a different take on global warming - quite unexpected - provided food for thought. I didn't like ANY of the characters, but that could have been based more on the way each was "interpreted" by the reader than the way they were written.

Great story, compelling arguments

Ok, this might not be Crichton's best but it deserves praises to bring another viewpoint into the so called Global warming debate. The story is highly entertaining and plausible most of the time. Not the best narrator.
For those seeking another perspective, this could be one of them. For those dogmatically entrenched into the "global warming religion" and its litigation strategy, you will be disappointed.

Slow and annoying start but worth it.

The beginning of the book is relatively slow and annoying, but once you get past that I highly recommend this book. This is one of those books that get you thinking about the "world" around you. And not necessarily the environment but rather the government and it's potential corruption.

Standard Crichton (and that's a good thing)

If you've read Crichton and like the way he shapes a story, then you won't be dissapointed.

It's full of scenes that you know are written to be put into the movie version.

The one star review on this book that calls it 'propaganda' pretty much proves Crichton's claim. If you dare to question (or even ask for proof of) claims of global warming then you are immediately branded a 'propagandist' or 'right wing' or a 'dupe of industry'.

I liked it almost as much as jurassic park and more than timeline.

So many people complained about the 'tummy noises' that I laughed every time I heard one.

MASTERFUL AND SUPERB

Crichton does amazing research for this book. I have talked about it for days with my family and friends. It is extremely informative and even more suspenseful. In only a couple of places does the unabridged version get "bogged down"...and for less than 3 minutes. It is simply a great read.(listen)

Crichton channels Ayn Rand

Picture "Atlas Shrugged" meets "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory", on the subject of global warming. Seriously.

I mostly enjoyed it, though.
