Publisher's summary

The undisputed master of the techno-thriller has written his most riveting, and entertaining, book yet.

Once again Michael Crichton gives us his trademark combination of pause-resistant suspense, cutting-edge technology, and extraordinary research. State of Fear is a superb blend of edge-of-your-seat suspense and thought provoking commentary on how information is manipulated in the modern world. From the streets of Paris, to the glaciers of Antarctica, to the exotic and dangerous Solomon Islands, State of Fear takes the listener on a rollercoaster thrill ride, all the while keeping the brain in high gear.

Critic reviews

" State of Fear is one of Crichton's best because it's as hard to pigeonhole as greenhouse gas but certainly heats up the room." ( Entertainment Weekly)
"Michael Crichton's new, can't-put-it-down novel is a first-of-a-kind thriller - a fast-paced adventure based on the notion that a current widespread fear is baseless." ( Forbes)

Great factual information put to fiction

This is a very political book so those who do not agree with the politics are not going to like it. I thought I disagreed until I checked some of the sources and found out that this book at minimum gives the reader some different facts than are typically heard in our mass media. The book causes you to think and ask questions where you might not have before. It does not get a 5 star from me because despite the great information that the author provides, the story is good but not great and can be preachy at times.

A awesome mind boggling story.

This book will really open your eyes up to what may be hidden from us by our peers. This was a amazing story back by facts and maybe our future. Thanks

great story, timely truth

Crichton delivers a candid and sober look at a controversial subject and does so in the midst of a thrilling chance around the world to stop eco-terrorists and lawyers who cover for them from stoking environmental fear for profit.

Excellent, Finally Counter to Enviromental Wackos

What did you love best about State of Fear?

I enjoyed the story, the narration, and the useful perspective on the whole enviromental wacko movement/ global warming hoax. It was great to hear a good story interweaved into such devisive issues and witness the courage of an popular author to address them despite the sway of the popular media/drive-bys/sheep. Rush Limbaugh recommended this book and I hate to tell you liberals, he was right on again!(Mistakenly placed this "review" on Timeline a while back; it really belonged with State of Fear, whoops--don't know how retract now).

What does George Wilson bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Excellent narrator.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Too long for one sitting, but very engaging over time.

Good but a little out there

Where does State of Fear rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

It was entertaining but I found some of the characters to be more than human with all the near death situations they faced

What was one of the most memorable moments of State of Fear?

the cannibal scene with the tv personality

Any additional comments?

seems like some of these people were just unbelievably strong...and survived some really bizarre situations.

A balanced bit of "fact~ion"

The best fiction writing is believable; with well developed characters, scenery, and plot. Crichton ticked all of the boxes for me. In an additional win, if you can read this novel objectively, there is a treasure trove of history and science that challenges the reader's preconceived notions about reality. In the end, the suspense plot was an aside for me. The heady concepts of psychology, climate theory, and historical context cemented this as one of the finest novels I've ever been exposed to.

great fiction

it's very well written however the global warming data used is from 2004 The overall premise of a state of fear however applies to more than just global warming and in that regard it still has relevance in for today

One of Crichton's best

I'm a huge fan of Crichton's work and this has been one of the best so far. The story is incredibly engaging and keeps you wanting to keep reading (/listening). George Wilson also does a great reading of the book and fits the story extremely well. This is one to read for sure.

One of Crichton's best

Would you consider the audio edition of State of Fear to be better than the print version?

Only had the audio edition

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

All I can say, it kept me on the edge

Which scene was your favorite?

The whole book

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes, if i could

Any additional comments?

Although the book is a fiction, all these clowns (including that moron Gore) that believe in "Global Warming" should read it and possibly may gain some facts.

By the way, what happened to global warming?
Or as an example we were told by those TV anchor idiots that people are dying from second hand smoking, asbestos and mold?
It is obvious that after the shysters collected billions of dollars, are now keeping their mouths shut. All of a sudden everything is quiet on Western Fronts.
Why the hell don't they sue the cartel. There are more people dying from overdose than than smoking, mold and asbestos.

I wish Crichton would write some books on these subject. He has the gift to expose these frauds
