"a fest of unnecessary, atrocious brutality"
I have devoured all the Ben Hope series and to date have thoroughly enjoyed them but I was immensely disappointed by this book which seemed to consist of a fest of unnecessary, atrocious brutality that added nothing to an already weak storyline. There just wasn’t enough content to hold my interest. The repetition of Ben being put into no win situations (his helplessness and lack of action being completely out of character) started to irritate me as the narrative was going nowhere, and what did Hercules and the lion add other than more gratuitous violence? I am not going to say too much about the relationship between Ben and his son, the underpinning of this book, as that wasn’t developed at all which was a further cause for frustration.
To add insult to injury, I got to the end of the book only to discover it was the first of two parts, Devil’s Kingdom, Ben Hope #15 is due out November 2016 and I might give it a miss.
With any luck in Ben Hope #16 Scott Mariani will return to delivering a tense, twisty thriller with a strong but humane hero fighting his way through ‘situations’ in order to right a wrong or maybe the series has run its course.
"Long winded , drawn out & Ben Hope totally out of character"
The story line seems like it was put together to a deadline.
Not much substance & Ben Hope out of character, Ben Hope would have taken the chance of freedom rather then letting 50 innocent people get butchered to save his son
"Excellent - One of the best Ben Hope books so far"
This is only Part 1. Lets hope Part 2 is as good. I have read all the entire Ben Hope series and I think only two books are on par with this one. So far, the story is very different from the previous books as it is not so far fetched, nor are historic facts twisted. That said, Mariano, does take licence and blends two very different every day issues that exist in the African Continent to come up with a great yarn (so far).
"I don't know what it is about this series"
Let me preface this review by saying I have read the whole series; all of them...
They could be so good, but they irritate the hell out of me. They so desperately need a good edit and proofing before they are unleashed on the world. They are riddled with inaccuracies that get in the way (apparently King Leonidas fought the Greeks not the Persians at Thermopylae?) things that don't sound right (blood 'pumps' from a dead man's smashed up brain when at most it would trickle) and cliches (grass as high as an elephant's eye anyone?). Please get a good editor Scott, it would be worth every penny (but I'll still keep reading you).
"Mariani does it again"
Hope and Dekker reunited is what I've been waiting for after the recent escapades in the Ben Hope series. Cracking first half to the story. Looking forward to the next one.
"It's one part of two"
A really good story but they don't warn you that's it's just part one!! I was so angry when it left me hanging - how long until the next book???
Wow what a great book. Can't be leave I now have to wait until November for the second part of this book. Any time a new Ben hope book is released its time to pause what ever I'm listening to and purchase the new book and commence what I know will be a great listen with lots of action, adventure and thrills. This book has all 3 of these. The narrater does a good job as always. If you like stephen leather clive cussler vince flynn and brett battles then you will most surely enjoy this book. So just give it a try, you won't regret it.
If you're looking for something to read, look no further. Scott Mariani's Ben Hope series is excellent.
Ben Hope is, the ultimate Action hero!
"The Fight Of His Life"
This is definitely number one for its action and grittyness
I can't decide I loved them all, I think it's a flip of the coin between Ben, Jeff and Tuesday
Now that's a tough one, I mean the book has so much action, the moment Ben finds out Jude's been kidnapped is a good scene, the ending too is a good one...
There were parts of this book where I couldn't stop laughing, but no mistake about it, as you keep on listening, the drama really keeps you hooked
I can't wait for the second part to this book, why can't it come out now? This has got to be Ben Hope at his finest, his very finest.
