And as the situation in Germany worsens, Zannis becomes involved in a plot to smuggle Jews to Istanbul through the back door of Europe. The British hear he can penetrate the continent's closed borders, and soon Zannis is embroiled in the resistance, and in a reckless love affair that could jeopardise everything.

    "Really Enjoyed"

Well crafted story about a Greek Detective and the events leading up to the invasion of Greece during the Second World War. Characterisation excellent, reading excellent.

Love having someone read me a story. Fires in the hearth, rain on the roof, sunny days and surf. Good friends, good food and J S Bach.

    Story
    "Normal people in extraordinary times"

While the Furst Series of 'Night Soldiers' is not avaulable to Australians, I am having to consider this as a stand alone novel.

The plot or story line may not please seekers of huge dramatic adrenaline pumping gun shoot outs and cliff scaling heroes, it is likely to please those who appreciate what a normal human can face and achieve in extra ordinary times.

The mood setting is good as is the exploration of self questioning and self doubt in being able to achieve even small success.

This is fiction and a work of imagination that can expand a reader's view of themselves in today's world as well as understand a little of the times that is the setting for this story.

    Nick Rawlinson reads well.

    "Story without a plot"

I listened to the entire book and still do not know what the plot entailed. It is like reading an ordinary person's diary.

    "Just ok but not gripping"

The story does enough to keep you listening but the story doesn't really go anywhere. This is quite frustrating and i was left thinking at the end - is that it! There are a lot of characters which can make the story difficult to follow in parts. The story is well researched and the history pretty interesting from a region that hasn't had much coverage during this era. I do wonder if the story might have been more engaging with a different narrator. The voice and style is a little odd and for me doesn't work with the story. Not sure if this has put me off Alan Furst novels.....?!
