Speak No Evil: A Novel | [Allison Brennan]

Speak No Evil: A Novel

The murder of 18-year-old Angie Vance was exceptionally vile - her mouth was sealed with glue, an obscenity scrawled was across her skin, and she was suffocated in a garbage bag. The killing seems personal, so police detective Carina Kincaid focuses her efforts on the victim's much older ex-boyfriend, Steve Thomas. But without physical evidence, Carina can't make a collar or a case. She also can't stop Sheriff Nick Thomas, the prime suspect's brother, from conducting his own unwelcome investigation.

Publisher's Summary

Silence is deadly.

Though Nick is still scarred and unsteady from a recent confrontation with a serial killer, he's determined to prove his brother's innocence. But his confidence is shaken when he learns of Steve's dark side, and when a friend of the murdered girl meets a similarly gruesome fate. With no time to lose, Carina and Nick work together to trap a psychopath, before another unlucky woman faces an unspeakable end.

Evil has spoken. Now see what it can do.

My favorite series are In Death and Eve Duncan Forensics. I prefer to read about strong female protagonists involved in a good mystery.

    "Terrible narrator"
Is there anything you would change about this book?

The narrator is awful. He sounds as if he is a bad actor reading a script out loud. He also does a horrible female voice and it's creepy when he talks from Karina's perspective.

I am a retired Court Reporter and I LOVE books. All kinds of books but my favorites are mysteries and period books. I like civil war books and some biographies.

This book was well written and the story line good. It held my attention from the first and I was sorry when it was over.

    Good beginning of series.

"Paging Fabio ... And, pack a Stetson."
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

An appropriate categorization would have brought me to 3. It's not a thriller. It's a bodice ripper. If I'd been interested in reading one of those, I might have been somewhat satisfied. That's on YOU, Audible.

What could Allison Brennan have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

Less female cop swooning over hard body sheriff. More suspense.

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Tim Lundeen?

Hm. I don't know. Mr. Lundeen was awful, unless he (like me) expected a very different story and read the book with his tongue planted firmly in his cheek, which occurred to me more than once as I was listening. Seriously, I don't think Sir Anthony Hopkins could have kept the audible eye-rolling out of his voice ...

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

In fairness, it's not my kind of book so I can't say it has no redeeming qualities. It was listed as a thriller and I expected a scary page turner. If I happened to be a fan of romance novels, maybe I wouldn't have been disappointed. That's on YOU, Audible.

    Any additional comments?

Heart-shaped ass and bulging breasts in a red lace bra with barely there matching panties meets hard body and they mostly look at each other but when they don't, they look for a sadistic serial killer. That's the book I got, not the book I bought.

"So-so, won't bother with any more."

A run of the mill bodice-buster wrapped in a crime story -- very formulaic, nothing new or unique about it, and not especially interesting. Not sure why I bought it, but I won't be looking for any more. Nothing especially bad about it, just nothing worth remembering, either. With so many great books out there (see the Linda Castillo series) you can give this one a pass.

I believe this person has read a lot of mystery-police novels and pieced together a plot typical for thousands of them based on what she had read. No imagination, nothing new. I didn't like the reader at all.

Bad dialogue with uninspired narration. Story-line was predictable but that alone doesn't ruin it for me but the cheesy dialogue is painful.

"Just Watch Criminal Minds for Free"
What did you like best about Speak No Evil: A Novel? What did you like least?

Nothing stands out in my mind to say what I liked best. The book was just another psycho killer story just like what is on TV every week. Nothing special or gripping.

Would you listen to another book narrated by Tim Lundeen?

    Yes

Did Speak No Evil: A Novel inspire you to do anything?

Wait for the new season of Criminal Minds this fall.

    Any additional comments?

I just wish there was a little more creativity in the story. It's almost like some of these books are fast food. It tastes pretty good while you are eating it, but after you are done you wonder why you ate it. Nothing special.
