Publisher's summary

Anthony Hetheridge, ninth baron of Wellegrave and chief superintendent for Scotland Yard, will marry Kate Wakefield in three weeks. It's inevitable - the invitations are out, the flowers are ordered, the cake is chosen. But murder waits for no man - and no wedding.

In London's prestigious West End, a disgraced CEO has been murdered at Hotel Nonpareil, an exclusive destination. No one, it seems, liked Michael Martin Hughes. Not his estranged wife, Thora, or his defiant son, Griffin. Not Hotel Nonpareil's manager, its head of security, or perhaps even the two most important women in Hughes' life: his future bride, Arianna; and his secret girlfriend, Riley. And before Hughes died, he incurred the wrath of none other than Sir Duncan Godington, longtime nemesis of both CS Hetheridge and DS Paul Bhar.

Male Narrator makes it impossible to think of Kate as pretty

He screeches her voice such that I envision a seventy year old Harpy. Can’t think of Kate as attractive, though I want to.

Good English Scotland Yard Mystery

Very upper " Lord" voice is the narrator. But...Lady Hetheridge's voice just did not fit!
The story was good. A little tongue in cheek.
The murderer was a very smarmy fellow!

Well done!

British-detective, British-humor, class-consciousness, family-dynamics, friction, friendship, laugh-riot, law-enforcement, mental-illness, mental-health-issues, procedural, London, romantic, wealthy, wedding, wedding-madness*****

Chief Superintendent (Baron) Hetheridge, his fiancée DS Kate Wakefield, and DS Paul Bhar are off on another bizarre homicide case and even the evil Duke Duncan Godington, (longtime psychopathic nemesis) shows up. The case is convoluted, and the team shows off their good sleuthing (especially as opposed to lazy braggart DI Jackson). All the while the background is about the wedding (Kate just wants to elope), Kate's self-absorbed sister and mother (brother and his caregiver live with Kate, as does her bright but suffering young nephew), Hetheridge's closet skeletons, and Bhar's personal life. This series is a whole lot of fun and laughs that make a mockery of reality. Love it!
I really appreciate the talents of voice actor Matthew Lloyd Davies to help me with easy differentiation of characters in the audio, and he always underplays the scenes!

Narrator cannot do English dialects.

I'm with the fellow who said the narrator makes it impossible to think of Kate as pretty. What they didn't say is the only characters he does well is their associate/colleague 'Paul' and Lord Anthony Hetheridge himself. Apparently this narrator has a very limited repertoire. For me the one star I gave the performance meant poor vs. 'not for me'. The book itself is good as far as story goes etc. BUT as we all know, a mediocre narrator can ruin a good book. Sorry. I may have to read the next ones rather than subject myself to Matthew Lloyd Davies' attempts at narrating.

Barely made it to the end

I wanted to like this book and there were moments when I enjoyed some of the humor but overall just did not enjoy the narration at all. It might be more enjoyable in print. The plot was not that intriguing. Sorry!

Fun

i I truly enjoyed this light fun story. Lord and Lady Etheridge's characters made the book for me.

Something blue and fun!

The narrator is brilliant with his variety of characters -he brings the story alive- light and entertaining.

aCozy mystery with clever dialogue , great cast

I found the dialogue engaging and I am difficult to please. It held my interest. My favorite moment was the scene where DI Jackson came to gloat in Hethridge's office and the romantic ending.Well done!

Good series

I really like this series. The stories are clever and the characters well developed. The narrator is great for all the character EXCEPT Kate. I know she's supposed to be from the poor side of town but she sounds like Betty Boop or Minnie Mouse.
