Editorial reviews

Editors Select, January 2013 - With a title like that how can you not be intrigued? Already an international bestseller, Neuhaus's US debut has garnered plenty of pre-release buzz for taking well-worn mystery staples (cold case, small town, unfriendly populace) and artfully weaving them together into something altogether fresh, with a story that keeps readers on their toes till the end. Publisher's summary

On a rainy November day, police detectives Pia Kirchhoff and Oliver von Bodenstein are summoned to a mysterious traffic accident: a woman has fallen from a pedestrian bridge onto a car driving underneath. According to a witness, the woman may have been pushed. The investigation leads Pia and Oliver to a small village, and the home of the victim, Rita Cramer.

On a September evening eleven years earlier, two seventeen-year-old girls vanished from the village without a trace. In a trial based only on circumstantial evidence, twenty-year-old Tobias Sartorius, Rita Cramer's son, was sentenced to ten years in prison. Bodenstein and Kirchhoff discover that Tobias, after serving his sentence, has now returned to his home town. Did the attack on his mother have something to do with his return? In the village, Pia and Oliver encounter a wall of silence. When another young girl disappears, the events of the past seem to be repeating themselves in a disastrous manner. The investigation turns into a race against time, because for the villagers it is soon clear who the perpetrator is - and this time they are determined to take matters into their own hands.

Twists and turns,oh yeah!

You think it's over, and the plot just thickens more. Everybody is guilty in this story! I'm pretty good at figuring things out. I did, but then the twists and turns entered. A must to add to one's listening library.

Dark as Night Red as Blood White as Snow!

What did you love best about Snow White Must Die?

The way the story appears to take on different avenues and plots, leaving the listener wondering just who killed the mysterious 17 year old girls? Who has Snow White mummified all dolled up... is the scary question?

What other book might you compare Snow White Must Die to and why?

This was my 1st Nele Neuhaus novel however I would compare her to Lisa Gardner, if I had to compare works to another author mainly because of the diverse plots and twist and turns of the main characters guilt or innocence.

Which character – as performed by Robert Fass – was your favorite?

Oliver von Bodenstein complex situation with his wife during the story is by far compelling and makes him one of my endeared characters. I also cant forget the main character Tobias Sartorius who has been accused of murder. Tobias is so hot, you can't believe you could like someone who may have committed such a crime.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I enjoyed listening to this audio in intervals, however the closer I came to end the more I wanted to find out who the killer was. I ended up listening to the last four hours straight to the end nonstop. I'll tell you a secret, the end is a funny surprise and turns out to be well worth the purchase.

outstanding

Where does Snow White Must Die rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Best since "girl with the dragon tattoo".

What was one of the most memorable moments of Snow White Must Die?

Entire story was both dramatic and believable -- a combination rarely achieved in mystery novels. Pieces of the puzzle got solved throughout the book which was satisfying while continuing to keep the mystery going. The side stories were so interesting I didn't feel frustrated that there were digressions from the main mystery as I so often do.

What about Robert Fass’s performance did you like?

He made the story come alive without being so full of emotion that the listener felt distracted.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The book was riddled with them.

Any additional comments?

Although the book was long and completely satisfying in it's ending I didn't want it to stop. I look forward to her next book.

This story is awesome!

I chose a five star rating because I really enjoyed this book. The plot twists were plenty and having lived in Germany, I was delighted to hear about the various German towns and streets in the story.

Deep Emotional Mystery

If you could sum up Snow White Must Die in three words, what would they be?

Heaven Save Us!

What other book might you compare Snow White Must Die to and why?

It compares easily to our best American mystery writers. I am now a real fan of Nele Neunaus! The story is multi faceted, has great depth, many characters well defined while it highlights the high cost of human frailty.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

no, it is more fun to draw this one out to 2 or 3 days to ponder and enjoy it more.

Any additional comments?

I am just delighted to be able to read great books like this one from other Countries. Don't miss this one.

Bad Translation

The book was entertaining, but the story had gaps and characters weren't well-developed. Next time, I'll go with Tana French.

Definitely worth reading!

it took me a bit to get into the story because the names were difficult; keeping track of who the characters were. But the story was very good kept me in suspense until the end and there were a few times I thought I had figured it out but was only partly correct. definitely worth the read. I really enjoyed the narrator.

Confusing at times

This was my first international story and it took me a while to keep up with the many characters. It was a good story though and glad I stuck with it.
