Editorial reviews

Editors Select, January 2013 - With a title like that how can you not be intrigued? Already an international bestseller, Neuhaus's US debut has garnered plenty of pre-release buzz for taking well-worn mystery staples (cold case, small town, unfriendly populace) and artfully weaving them together into something altogether fresh, with a story that keeps readers on their toes till the end. Publisher's summary

On a rainy November day, police detectives Pia Kirchhoff and Oliver von Bodenstein are summoned to a mysterious traffic accident: a woman has fallen from a pedestrian bridge onto a car driving underneath. According to a witness, the woman may have been pushed. The investigation leads Pia and Oliver to a small village, and the home of the victim, Rita Cramer.

On a September evening eleven years earlier, two seventeen-year-old girls vanished from the village without a trace. In a trial based only on circumstantial evidence, twenty-year-old Tobias Sartorius, Rita Cramer's son, was sentenced to ten years in prison. Bodenstein and Kirchhoff discover that Tobias, after serving his sentence, has now returned to his home town. Did the attack on his mother have something to do with his return? In the village, Pia and Oliver encounter a wall of silence. When another young girl disappears, the events of the past seem to be repeating themselves in a disastrous manner. The investigation turns into a race against time, because for the villagers it is soon clear who the perpetrator is - and this time they are determined to take matters into their own hands.

Nicely done

This novel was overall enjoyable. The characters were nicely drawn, the plot, basically holds together to its own internal logic. There were a few flaws and weirdly misplaced clues, but overall, nice.

My only criticism of this novel is that it dragged a bit in some places. One of the drawbacks to audiobooks.

I recommend it. Not for the reader who wants something quick and light. It's a bit more intense.

Convoluted story

Interesting story. Full of surprises and twists. Several story lines. Good details on Germany in Frankfurt am main area. Sometimes more detail on individual lives not really concerning the murders.

Watch for the next translation.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes. My wife loved it, too. The author is well known in Germany and I'm sure she will develop a following in this country.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Snow White Must Die?

No major highlight, it was all good.

Suprisingly Amazing!

I was blow away by the complexity of the story. It had me guessing from the first page to the last. The plot twists and characters were so well developed and slowly exposed throughout the book. It was suspenseful and difficult to turn off. One of the best suspense/mystery novels I've listened to in a long time. It had the same gritty/original feel as, "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo."

Terrible Secrets in the Black Forrest

As a fan of foreign detective stories, how could I pass up one set on the edges of the Black Forrest? Although this is the first Bodenstein & Kirchhoff translated into English, it's actually the 4th book in the series, and you can tell these characters have history together.

Plotting made me a fan

This was the first title I had read from this author. The detailed plotting that kept me guessing till the end made me a fan of her work. I still believe this is my favorite story of those I have read (listened to).

GREAT suspense, smart plot!

Great pysch thriller! Poor Toby's been dealt a bad hand, but when he gets out of prison for two murders he doesn't remember committing, he expects to be able to start anew. Sorry to say, that's not going to happen...not when another girl ends up dead in this tiny town in Germany, and everyone assumes he's the guilty party. Small town thinking and small town secrets play large in this thriller, and you really can't wait to get to the end. I love Robert Fass' narration, and he does a great job on this police procedural. I don't want to say more and spoil it for anyone . . . !

Unique

Is there anything you would change about this book?

I know that this was a translation from German to English but I'm not sure that it was a good one. It was extremely slow moving with bits about characters that had no effect on the main characters of the book.

Would you be willing to try another book from Nele Neuhaus? Why or why not?

Probably not. If it had not been an audio book I would have never finished it.

I loved it!

I commute daily and I caught myself regularly almost being late because I didn't want to stop listening. I heard this is part of a series so I'm so excited to listen to the rest.
